Engine Tech / Re: Failed Smog, high HC readings, help
had to do the emmission thing twice a year when i lived in PA had to do it when i moved to FL but they have since rescinded.
Same litany as always wehn dealing with this, check ALL vaspoogen lines. check all sensors, new filters, try new plugs. Have had a decent running car with good plugs fail inspection then change plugs and pass. even though the car didn't seem to run and different. Also high HC readings at the tailpipe means that the HC's are going through the cat.....which can clog if run that way too long. This can lead to porr performance or waiting for tow truck.

At The Track / Re: got some new times in my 86 tbird
your mechanic is right if your still accelerating at the end of the 1/4 you can use more gear. just watch out for drivabilty issues and gas milage. When we campainged the old 64 mustang coupe we ended up going all the way to 4:56's so we were hitting top end about 150 ft short of the traps.  Using the old "d" code 289 4 bbl it put us in "N-stock" class (no external engine mods, stock displacement plus 10%, stock outer case on the tranny, no body mods) don't know what the new rules are haven't raced since the early 80's. but our best time running the "stock set up was 13.40 something

Body/Appearance/Interior / paint scheme
well as discussed in another thread. the boy had his first (only i hope) fender bender. He rear eneded a mini van at about 10 miles an hour. Hard on the brakes nose down on the bird, back end up on the van. Cracked the header panel didn't touch the grille. Small kink in left fender. He's out of school for sumer break  May 12th. We start that week on repairs. Thinking of turbo hood with stock LX nose peice, straigthen the fender, clean up some small door dings and then repaint. thinking of going with a darker silver or charcol color, then doing a starsky and hutch stripe in the light silver. What do you all think. car is origanly light silver with maroon interior. Will probally put on the 16" 5 stars at that time also.

User Rides / Re: added rear spoiler
i got it the junk yard. beleive it or not it was on the backof a sterling coupe. I don't know if was original to the car or not. but it was the right size so i took it. paid $20.00 sanded it down resprayed with "bumper coater" in black, 4 holes in the decklid and there you go. want to do a front. the 69 mustang is close but the curve is wrong so the point sticks too far forward. Anyone else ever put a front one on? what do you use. Was planning on ground effects but i'm worried about clearence issues so i thought i just go front and rear spoilers

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Re: wanna know what im sick of?
find a new mechanic. try several, drive around and see if they have any older stuff in the bay to be worked on. As far as "it's not worth their time" i've never gotten a discount becuase of the age of my car. my money spends the same as the money from a guy with a 2003 or 2004 car. Basically the work ethic isn't there any more, a lot of the guys in the trades have a similar atitude, buy a new fridge don't fix this one, new tv's are so much more advanced, don't fix this one. i got my mitsubishi 27" with pnp and stereo out of trash can, spent $78.00 for a power something and have had it for 6 years now.

Lounge / Re: Share your road rage stories...
This happened a while back. 1988 or so. I was driving with my two brothers and a freind of theirs on a sunny saturday afternoon. pulled up to a stop light, not paying close attention and i tapped i mean tapped. barely a ring from the two bumpers. the guy in front of me, he's driving a 65/66 nova wagon. He turns around looks me dead in the eye puts his car in reversve and floors it. Mean while his wife/girlfriend is pounding on him to stop i guess, What an ass. I was in my 65 mustang, modded C4,302 HO (stealth conversion) 3:25 posi rear. so i floored it and pushed him into the intersection. Then this guy pulls over and gets out of the car and makes a fist and waves me over. Ha, I pull over and my freinds and i unfold ourselves out of the car at 6'0" and 265 i'm the smallest of the four of us. Should have seen the look on the guys face. and the 6 banger nova can get wheels if you flog it hard enough. every once in a while i remind the guys about it and we still get a laugh

Drivetrain Tech / xr7 to t-bird swap
while junking on sunday  is saw in the yard an 88 cougar XR7. info shows that the 88 Cougar XR7 came standard with 8.8 rear and the larger drum brakes. this may be an easier swap than the t/c rear for my 87LX. will this be a bolt in or are their other differences that i should be aware of. Also the 88 XR7 came standard with a posi and 3.08 gears instead of the 2.73 open rear in the 87 LX.

Engine Tech / best exhaust upgrade
really starting to get into this. My son even wants to help and add bucks to the upgrades. we set our sites on some exhaust work. 87 5.0 with aod. want to go with some dual pipes. don't want to do any heavy mods to brackets and such around engine bay and trans. do i need headers, shorties, long tube, equal unequal? h pipe, X-pipe, no crossover at all? how about cats and lers.

Body/Appearance/Interior / more leg room
the boy is now 6'5"  340 lbs and still growing (16 year old) pulled the power seat out of the car. split the seat frame from the power unit. took some 3" by 3/8" bar stock and welded in to the lower unit. right over the seat mounting holes. the bar stock is about 5" longer than the seat frame, the extra is to the rear of the car. I measured the seat mounting holes and redrilled the bar stock 4 inches rear ward. bolted  the seat back together and installed. the seat now powers back to within 1 inch of the rear seat.  :rollin: full forward my 5'6" wife can still drive the car and my son nows has plenty of leg room
