xr7 to t-bird swap April 14, 2005, 03:14:41 PM while junking on sunday is saw in the yard an 88 cougar XR7. info shows that the 88 Cougar XR7 came standard with 8.8 rear and the larger drum brakes. this may be an easier swap than the t/c rear for my 87LX. will this be a bolt in or are their other differences that i should be aware of. Also the 88 XR7 came standard with a posi and 3.08 gears instead of the 2.73 open rear in the 87 LX. Quote Selected
Re: xr7 to t-bird swap Reply #1 – April 14, 2005, 03:24:59 PM If the car hasn't been modified in any way it will have th 8.8 rear, 10" drums, and a 3.08 ring gear. It's a clean swap. The rear should have quad shock as well. The tag on my car siad 7.5" rear, 9 inch drums, 2.73 open. When I bought it off the previous owner it still had a 7.5, but it had 10 inch drums and 3.27's with a trak-lok. Also had the correct speedo gear so I was pleased to say the least. He did a lot of the work for me ;) Quote Selected

Re: xr7 to t-bird swap Reply #4 – April 14, 2005, 11:57:50 PM its got a floor shifter tho, snag that and maybe the tranny to if they dont let you just take the shifter. get the kickdown cable and all to. and you'll probley want the console for inside the car along with the bucket seats to match everything up. it all kinda snow balls when ya start changing stuff lol. Re: xr7 to t-bird swap Reply #5 – April 15, 2005, 01:13:34 PM you wont need the kickdown, but youll need the console, controle bracket, and radio surround, if you dont already have the full consoleif you get the floor shifter, youll want to grab the shifter, cable, the moutning bracket, and possibly crack into the tranny and get the little shifter arm, its not needed, but makes the install more factory Quote Selected
Re: xr7 to t-bird swap Reply #6 – April 15, 2005, 01:35:55 PM If you gonna convert to a floor shifter, also get the kickdown cable and the bracket that holds it at the tranny... Then you can do away with the goofy kickdown setup the 5.0 column shift cars use... Quote Selected
