Hey guys! Car is smoking. I think I blew a turbo seal...... probably due to not running water through the Holset. I will know once I pull the exhaust downpipe and a couple of plugs. If it's not that I have a bigger issue and that would suck.

On the tacho:

Two things. One is to build a simple circuit using a small relay to trigger a pulse that the tach can use. The tach needs a 'dirty' large amplitude signal in order to work, and I wasn't able to get a good signal without using the relay coil.

Secondly, you trigger the relay circuit from an output off of MS. If you have a 4 cylinder tacho this needs to be cut in half to read properly.

All the parts to build it cost about 6 bucks or so, and I mounted mine in the fender well up front.

If you need help on something, give me a shout. I'll help as best I can. I never used a MS2, so I may only be of limited use to you. Good luck with it!

I am going to tear into mine soon to see what is causing the oil smoking. I REALLY hope it is the turbo gone bad, since I'd like to go with a different one anyway. If it's the heads or rings I'll be very upset.

Thanks. I've got a problem with the ms build. Here's a link.  http://www.mshagtra.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=132&t=58887  I've also started a build in user rides.
I'm still going forward with car side hopefully this weekend the car will be close
Thanks

Hey peeps!

Man time flies. I've done quite a bit more work on the car. The turbo system is GONE. I think that Holset was an awful choice and was severely mismatched to the V8.

Since removing it the car runs 100% better and all my water use and smoking problems are gone along with it.

Removing the turbo, I had to get new proper V8 throttle and cruise control cables, re-flip the intake, re-do the fuel system, change injectors, remove the intercooler, relocate the PS reservoir, re-do the vacuum system, add a catch can, make a new air filter system, cut the turbo piping off the headers and flip them back to normal, add a Summit 2 1/2 inch H-pipe, buy and install a new dual exhaust (I used Mark V11 pipes and s) and totally re-tune the transmission and engine computers to match the new combo.

While I was at it I glued on the dash cover......it has been free-floating for years LOL. I also hated the fuel pressure gauge, so I pulled it off, relocated the O/D light and wideband button to the steering wheel console and put a stock clock back in. I like it a lot better now, especially at night.

I've been driving the car this way for a few months now and I like it a lot. Yesterday after pulling in to the drive, the overflow bottle began to puke out antifreeze. It turns out that the Dakota fan controller (or sending unit for it) has bit the dust. Today I'll be removing that and using the spare circuit I previously built into Megasquirt for water injection and re-purposing it to control the fan relay.

Cheers!

Jim

And the new overflow bottle location. I still want to get the A/C hooked up since I have never gotten around to doing it yet. I just need to get a crimping tool and make hoses to complete that part.

Nice to see an update on this build.  Was one of my favorites.  Sucks that you had issues.  Did you ever think of getting a more suited turbo for it?  I did the 6.0L LSX swap in my 84 and will be adding a 7875 turbo.  The turbo I choose is a bit small but will hit all my goals easy.  Max power I want is around 700 at the wheels.

Hey, Jim. Glad to see that you still have this. It's been a while!

I did think about swapping turbos, but I decided instead to simplify the car. I felt that I wasn't using the turbo power much and with the new heads it has plenty of grunt.

400+ is PLENTY for a street car IMHO.

I got a Jaguar XKR with 400 supercharged ponies and that is perfect for me. You should get lots of grins with 700!

Hi Chuck. Yeah I still have it and the TR7 2.3 turbo. I took a year to swap back to normally aspirated due to laziness. LOL I also had some hand problems that are better now, so I can work in the garage again without pain. It sucks getting old!

Thanks, man.

Did you get that Megasquirt sorted out? I never did get a good idle using a Ford valve on MS1. In the end I just upped the idle and run it open loop for cold start. I threw in the towel after a LOT of messing with it.

Why did you take out the Tremec? Problems or making a change?

For the record, the issue with the Dakota fan controller was water intrusion onto the circuit board and a failed resistor. I used the water injection circuit on the breadboard I built long ago and used it to control the high speed fan and it is working fine.
