1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1096 – January 18, 2014, 10:53:24 AM I think that would be safe enough, yes. Somewhere in the 12ish psi range. I'd like to check the backpressure to see where that's at. First I need to re-do the vacuum venturi so it actually sucks. It can be a challenge to get it just right based on what I see on the inter-web. I'll keep at it until I get some results. Luckily the downpipe isn't too hard to get off and on.I have to pull the instrument cluster and install the solid state regulator I got as well. I got the carpc back in and am playing with it to get all the features working. The new steering column control stalk will be here Monday and I can get that on. That ought to bring the car up to speed on the inside. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1097 – January 18, 2014, 12:40:20 PM You must be joking.Alternator died after 150 miles without header wrap. The wrap is going back on.Hopefully the coating will help delay the rust issue. It seems to be holding up where I prepped well, but doesn't do as much for heat reduction as the wrap. It's just too tight around the alternator. To be fair, I've been hearing a squeak up there at times, and it was a JY alternator. I'll go get an Advance or Autozone new replacement and get the lifetime warranty in case I have future issues. I won't mess with their reman electric stuff. Quote Selected

The bright side is I saw it near the house and got here with just over 9V left. It was missing but MS didn't drop out.It turns out that I had two things going on. I put in the new alternator and was still showing battery voltage. I scanned the wiring diagram and the first connector I checked was starting to come loose. I probably had an intermittent problem that helped take out the old alternator. (I had it checked and she was a goner.)So now with a fresh alternator and some wrap on the adjacent pipe I should be good to go again. Quote from: thewestie;427541Good luck with the alternator. AZ didn't have a new one in stock so I took the Premium Lifetime Reman. I was told if it fails I can pay $20 and upgrade to a new one. I had a 20% off coupon and $8.00 in bonus cash from using my AZ card, so it came to $130 out the door. Luckily it's not golf season. lolI have a spare here I want to try to find a regulator and brushes for. I wish now I'd have done it sooner. I just wanted to get it done this time. The car is tuning up well. It is idling and driving better and stronger than ever. Still no leaks. Quote Selected

The carpc even comes to life in this extreme weather when I would not expect it to. I just need to keep tuning and get the next set of parts on to get serious about seeing what this combo really is. I.E. dyno and track times! Quote Selected

1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1108 – February 06, 2014, 09:57:03 PM Still tinkering with the tune, Travis. And running out the 89 octane. Cold starts are getting better but take the longest time to get just right because you only get one change per day basically. Because I am ic in nature I drove it to work and left it in the lot for 3 days when it was the coldest. It started up for me when I got back, but died 3 times on the afterstart enrichment after 10 seconds or so before it got warm enough to idle strong. I left it again this week for 4 days and it died once before catching in 17 degree weather, so it's getting closer. Like I said, the only way to tune it is to use it in these conditions. Once I get it it should always work. The TR7 tune is super solid and starts before the engine cranks over twice in all weather. (It is using the open loop fast idle, which is MUCH easier to tune than closed loop, though.)I did a hundred foot burnout in front of the house the other day after I had THOUGHT I was tuned in on the fuel and spark pretty well, but it rattled on me while feathering the throttle at just over 1/2 and I immediately lifted. I reworked the timing table a bit where I had the issue and took a datalog that I still have to look at. No WOT other than that one burst so far. Wastegate is on the spring alone and is around 10 psi and holding steady. Otherwise, aside from still needing to rework the breather venturi tube, all is well. No leaks at all of any kind and it runs nice on the highway. I only have a 1 pint overflow bottle and it never pukes any fluid out of it and the rad stays full. YES!!! It takes almost no throttle to travel at highway speeds. I am curious what power it makes even without the turbo. The to-do list includes installing a new 256g SSD I picked up to replace the HDD in the PC for faster boot times and lower power consumption, removing the dash cluster to install the solid state IVR and remove the ABS fail light, gluing down the dash top cover, and getting the auto headlamps to work. I love that feature on the Milan and would like to have it function in the 'bird, too. I have to paint the side moldings, then installing the trunk carpet and finally adding A/C will finish it off.I got some nice 31 spline 4-lug hardened axles in the right length from 86tbird, and am looking for a diff to put them in along with a brand new 31 spline trac-loc. I'll weld the axle tubes on it when I do it. Ideally I want to prep a complete axle and just swap it in when I am ready. Hopefully I can come up with a stout torque converter by then as well and do it all at once. Until those parts are in I am taking it pretty easy on it, but not babying it completely, either. I am considering adding a dash cam, parking curb cam and a pen 15pit cam that I can set to record on a loop while I drive, and/or select for viewing on DriveLine. Not sure about that yet, but cameras are getting pretty cheap and I like toys. The DriveLine software is really nice on the carpc. I have everything I need now, or want. It is fast, stable, and easy to navigate. (And free!) Too bad I screwed around with bad heads for so long. I wasted a lot of time on that and got discouraged to boot for a while. I pretty much love the thing now, though. Hard to imagine it as it was when I drug it here way back when. Quote Selected
1988 TC single Holset turbo 5.0/ 4R70W Reply #1109 – February 07, 2014, 11:07:57 AM Sounds like fun :). I bet the engine makes somewhere between 325-350hp without the turbo. Most 302, GT40 intake, Twisted Wedge 170/Edelbrock Performer/AFR 165 headed cars make in that range. Quote Selected
