I'll be blunt here. Would YOU....any of you pay 4500 for that car?

If it had very much sentimental value to me, I'd keep it...if it was a high mileage 3.8 car with mechanical issues...AND I had the money for new car payments, AND insurance...you goded right I'd trade it in. Right now I don't have a reliable vehicle I can call my own, but if I did, no, I would'nt trade it. It's all about what the  (former) owner is going through. And, as it's been said on this board a million-and-one times, to most of the general population, these cars we call Foxes are just an old 80's 2 door car, mostly imprcatical to todays multi-children families. Then the added maintenance of a 20something year old vehicle, and they're usually not fit for a daily driver.

I know I'm gonna ruffle feathers as soon as I hit the "post reply", but realize most people don't give a flying shag about our favorite cars. Yes, it is a shame, and it is reality.

Now, can someone legally acquire a "c4c" car after it's been....turned in, for lack of better words?

BTW, that IS a  nice Cougar, be nice to drop in my HO, T5, and Turbines, and call it a cruiser...

You have valid points.
Yes, no-one was going to give that owner 4,500 for that Cougar. IF it was in great working condition, maybe 2,500....3k tops.

I can see the owners view on turning it in.

I know the dealers have to seize the engine. I don't care about that. I just would like to have the rest of the car to make a drag car (un-gutted of course) with a sleeper look and a 460. :D

I am going to ask them which salvage yard will get the group (if they will tell me) and try to buy the rolling chassis.

Isn't the C4C program stating that they will give UP TO $4500?
If that's the case, I bet they didn't get $4500

C4C gives $4500 if your increase in fuel economy is 10MPG or higher. If it's lower than 10MPG you get $3500. Or something like that. I know that there are only two rebates, $3500 and $4500, and you need to meet a certain MPG increase to get the higher rebate, I'm just not sure of the exact amount.

i work @ a yard that partites in the c4c program...we cannot sell the vehicles, rolling chassis ect. However we can sell body panels, glass ect, engine parts are off limits... yeah it's sad all kinds of good vehicles are going, late 90's f150 with under 100k on it, even heard of a corvette even going...plus all the engines that are being destroyed, the good news is that the f150's were the last to sieze with the "liquid sand".

It's liquid glass, not sand. If most of the car can be salvaged, I'd say the only thing that has to go is the 3.8 auto, and I know no one on here would miss that combo.

Nope.  The free market forces without government intervention made cars like this inexpensive and affordable for us and those on a budget.  Not so much anymore... at least until the money runs out.  Then lets see what's left.

Also, our timeline for running out of parts and cars will get fast-forwarded a bit because of this.  Don't know by how much though, hopefully not much at all but we'll have to see.
"lol.. because not too many people care for that style of car"

We called the dealer and they told us that they were going to hire their own crushing operation and not send them to a salvage yard. They even told us they cannot sell any parts off of them.
Bunch of mis-informed asses.

My only hope here is that they never get their rebate checks and lose their asses !

Stupid ass politicians put way too high of a "bounty" on these old cars @ 3500 and 4500.....JMO :D...now I need a drink.

I knew this was whole C4C thing was gonna end up more bad than good.

And the "Car"nage begins...

I like thuderchickens comments on another thread,,, I to wonder how effiecient it is to crush, melt down, respool metal and rebuild another car.,,if thats where the metal goes.  Smells like the same amount of pollution (usa) if not more (china) to me.

So,, my thoughts on this whole thing are all founded on the premis behind all the fake money holding it up similair to my bitching and moaning about the first stimulus by GB junior.

All this sounds like a behind the scenes drug deal between the US and china to pay back debt in the form of metal.  GO GREEN,,ha!!

OH,, and one other thing,,,,,,,,

I do not believe that toyota, nissan ect should be qualified to run the program.

why you ask?
Because the money goes to another countries stock market. I dont give a rats ass about those who say "but,,,but,,but,, they are made in the US".

the only  reason they are made in the usa is because our own US makers slipped and let them become a pack leader in the auto market here.  Shame on us.

cassity,
I agree about the foreign cars. They shouldn't qualify.  I was going to post it up the other day, but didn't want to get attacked for it. But I wanted to say, I agree.

It's a sad thing, this Cash for Clunkers business. I have been in Indiana for the past week and a half for work, and on my drive home last night, once i got back here to where I live, I saw a 30 or 40 yard dumpster with at least two (as far as I could see from the road) cars inside at a local py GM dealership. What a mess.

I read on CNNMoney that 80% of the trade-ins were trucks and SUV's, so it's not all horrible news. And of course, most of those were Explorers, so I suppose we'll be losing some GT40 and GT40P heads and Cobra intakes.

One thing to remember, is that for the most part the cars being traded in were junkers. They look like perfectly good cars to us (IE the Cougar in this thread), but they were not worth the amount of money given to them. If they were worth more than the $4500 (or $3500) the dealer would talk the customer out of C4C and into a plain trade-in so he could sell the car and make money on it. At least a smart dealer would. I know, I know... smart dealer = oxymoron, but no dealer in his right mind is going to let somebody trade a $10k vehicle in for $4500 worth of C4C money...

Yeah, I know, I'm grasping at straws, but I hope at least a little bit of common sense prevails when it comes to who's trading what in...

Am I missing something here? Just for grins I went to the Ford website and used the calculator to figure what the amount would be for my 87 Bird with a 3.8 automatic. The car doesnt qualify, so how did someone turn in that Cougar? I have a feeling alot of cars getting turned in wouldnt qualify as honestly how many of them out there were getting under 18mpg(avg when new) I would hate to be the poor dude who turned in a car with no payment thinking he was getting a new car less 4500 only to recieve a call from the dealer stating, we sped your car and now found out it didnt qualify so we need 4500 more. My personal opinion was that this program was a dumb idea from the start with to many gray areas. In some ways its quite similar to the housing mess. Getting people into things they cant afford does not stimulate growth. By the way, I had no thought of sping my Bird, I was trying to prove my point to a guy I know who turned in his vehicle which by all the C4C calculators isnt eligible. Yes he's driving around a new vehicle but he cant figure why he has a temp plate and they didnt transfer his old tag, doesnt smell right to me.
