You are missing something ;)

That '86 Cougar has the 3.8/C5 drivetrain combo, which just squeaks in at 18MPG. Your '87 with the 3.8/AOD combo gets 19MPG combined and is therefore ineligible. The only 87-88 T-Bird that qualifies is the automatic TC.

I would think any dealer that gave C4C money and then didn't get the rebate because the car didn't qualify would be SOL. It's up to the dealership, not the customer, to make sure the vehicle they take in on trade is eligible.

Here's a list of Cougars on the chopping block:
1988: All V8 Cats (88XR7 and V8LS)
1986: XR-7 with auto trans
1986: V6 with C5 trans
1985: XR-7 with auto trans
1985: All V6 and V8 Cats
1984: XR-7 with auto trans
1984: V6 with C5 trans
1984: All V8 Cats

All of the Mk VIIs are up on the block as well...except the diesels LOL.

Edit: 1986-87 5.0 didn't qualify either so that's a little better.

This is what's in store for that Cougar. It's law that every car traded in under cash for clunkers is destroyed in this manner. If the dealer doesn't do it then they get fined $15,000.

Most 84's are too old to qualify. 25 years and older don't qualify.

I watched the video of the Thunderbird get it's engine blown up last night and lost sleep over it. Many good cars are being destroyed for no reason.

I watched the video too, and it further supports the view that this entire program is asinine. The new classics are being executed so people can make payments on a bland, heavy, bloated new car.

There is a bias here, of course; we're all car enthusiasts and have a penchant for any vintage cars. Somebody submitted a beautiful '86 Mustang GT (pictures on Corral Forums) and I felt physically ill.

This video really made me feel sick about the program:

When I think about how they will grenade every engine in every car in the program, it just seems so insanely stupid. Incredibly senseless and wasteful.
It's like a group of kids came up with the idea while stoned.
What better way to perpetuate the throw-away consumer society in which we live.

I became physically nauseated with this one:

'01 Mazda pick-up with 75k miles.

Where is this country going to be in 10 years? Will we eventually have to pay extra taxes and/or fines for driving these cars?
