It's time to work on the Bird...

Hello,

As stated in one of My past message, I rebuilted My '85 Bird in 2000 for My mother, after 4 years sitting in the grass, buried under the snow, ect, ect, she donated to Me in May 2005, the engine was sic a bit, and the paint was very very damaged, but the body not very very rusted, last year I rebuilted the 232ci from A-Z, new coils on 4 wheels, and brand new single exhaust, full equipped the car, and just buffed the body, but no miracle with the paint...

Last week I jackstanded the car, removed all the wheels, and Friday after the lunck I started to work seriously on My car, removed tail lights, rear bumper cover, grinded some areas where the car is rusted, not a lot, but the driver side rear fender is so damaged (picture #1)around the wheel from the top to the bottom rear I cutted around 1", I'll repair with a form from a front fender (I guess i'll fit), or mold My own section, I'll finish this today (saturday), I guess:hick:

Same thing for the passenger side rear fender (pic #2), but repairable with pure lead (like 40's and 50's body jobs), it's tough to do, but make a very good job.

I removed the rear bumper cover (pic #3) just to sandblast and repaint the bumper frame with a black tremclad, removed the interior of the trunk too, and grind it/sandblast it, and paint with a black tremclad too...

I shoot the tremclad with My primer gun, an old DeVilbiss JGA-502 with a #30 tip, 80% tremclad and 20% gas, at 75psi.

Wow,you jumped in head first !!! Keep us posted on the progress.Once I start the work on the sport,I'll do a before during and after with it.Good luck my friend.It looks like you're on the right track.

Hello Vinnie!,

It's time to start, we are the January 20, and the spring coming so fast, I not started working on the Bird before because I don't have a lot of job to do on the body, doors are nice, front fenders too, in reality it's just the rear quarters, and the portion between the back glass and the trunk lid, this f!ck!n part was rebuilted in 2000, but the finition is peeled, and some little rust on that portion, I hate to work here:beatyoass: .

after the back of the car, I'll repair My damaged (bumped a lot) TC hood, not rusted, but some stupid walked and danced on, This is easy to repair, but need a loooong finition...

After all of this, I'll remove the front fenders, the hood, the header panel and front bumper cover, brush or sandblast the front end support and black tremclad it, and reinstall all BUT I found a TC bumper cover to install My oem ford foglights:D .

After the car have all the chrome trims removed, keys, door handles, I'll prime it completely, and wait on april to sand for the last time with a #600 grit, and new paint finally:hick: :hick: :hick: ...

Between the bodywork finished, I'll make My dual exhaust, and install all new cables for the emergency brake.

The only thing I'm not already decided is the kind of paint I'll shoot on it, a base coat/clear coat, or an acrylic enamel with a clear, I guess I'll do the paint with a base coat, but if the money don't want, I'll shoot with an acrylic...

This winter the paint is My priority because I hate My bird with the paint burned by the sun, matte and crackled, eerk!...

But this summer the Bird will shine a lot:D ...

My Sport project has py paint also.It was a gold color,then repainted another gold color which is also peeeling of.Once the better weather gets here,I'll start sanding and getting it ready for paint.I want to swap all of my parts into it first,like my H.O engine,etc.I don't want to risk scratching new paint up with all the parts that will be going on.Mine is going to be an orangy copper color.I've seen it a lot on some of the new GM cars.It's a burnt orange almost with metal flake.really nice.

Wow, I like the color You say, and YES, do all mod's or other swap BEFORE painting the car, and when he have a clean new paint, it's always a kind of mistake to scratch it, on a py paint it NEVER arrive heheeheh!...

Mine will be dark blue metallic (strong metallic, My own code), I have no choice cauz My Bird is a medium blue interior, it's a great code it look purple a bit at the night, very good...

I purchased another 4 eye Bird in October at the Junkyard for $600 bucks, the V6 has a blown gasket, the interior is a kind of gold, the exterior gold too, the body was NEVER repaired or repainted, absolutely NO rust in this F!ck!n car, I'll just change the head gasket, repair some things to pass inspection to get on the road again...

This is My second project, I'll full equip like My '85, rebuild the engine, ect, ect, and I'll paint BLACK, this is My next winter project, two birds in My basp00get garage, eheheheh!...

OH!, finally, I just come from auto parts to buy a finishing putty, some sandpaper, glazers, ect, and asked to the clerk for a base coat paint for My code, $850.00 FORGET IT!!!!:beatyoass: , I'll paint acrylic, 5 quarts, plus hardener, plus diluter, $285.00, It's okay for Me and My budget too:hick:

Have fun with the hood. That is one reason I have taken so long to paint my TC hood. The rear driver side corner was bent over and the skin seperated. I work in a Body Shop, so I have time and supplies to work on it. I have put a total of 8(two 4 coat applications) coats of primer, and hand-sanded it with 400 twice after I ground the dents down and filled them. Im finally to the point where i should just have to sand it down once more with some 400, clean it and spray it. Good job so far on the rust repair.

I only have 3 things on the body of my Sport to address.One,the right front fender on the lower front ir rolled under just a tiny bit,hardly noticeable,but,I'm going to replace it (it would take longer to fix it than to just replace it).The second spot,is a little dent on the upper right rear fender.Looks like a golf ball hit it,hard.I'll hammer it out and then the last spot,is the lower right rear fender,below the trim,looks like someone sed it up against something.A little time hammering and a little filler,all will be good.The TC hood i bought is in need of paint,but has no dents at all.The interior is where the work will be.The headliner is totally shot (the board is good though),the seats are all leather and tore up bad,the carpet probably has a couple of gallons of dried soda and whatever the previous owner spilled on it.The dash has cracks.I made a deal with Dashcovers USA for one of there overlays.I'm in the process of cleaning what I can and replacing everything else.I really want to keep the tan interior,but I'd have to literally replace everything.The seats,kickpanels,rear side panels,inner door trim and door panels.I'm looking for a ocal car that can donate it's interior,otherwise,it's going to all be swapped out with the Raven interior in my daily driver.Time will tell.Seems like a lot of us are rebuilding cars from scratch.Nice to have company.

Your car don't need a big body work, it's a half Day job maybe :-), For Your hood, You probably paid Your a lot more mine ($10.00), I searched a lot a TC hood in Quebec, and nothing, except this damaged hood...

I changed My headliner last winter, mine was totally s, the foam was like a caramel, I purchased an headliner from a Cougar '88 from a JY for 5$, (red), and painted gray with a fabric spray paint, and look great.

I finally finished the bodywork on My Bird, the only thing to do again is sanding the finition putty, 1st layer, and sanding some spots on the 2nd layer, and sanding the whole car, I'll sand the whole car only a couple of day before paint...

I repaired the driver side fender Yesterday, I cutted a front fender of a '87 bird 2 inches over the wheel and welded (with a mig) on My quarter, this make a perfect piece without a job to make My own...

3rd pic is a shot of the front fender I cutted the piece to repair My rear fender...

And YES Vinnie, it's fun to talk with another guy's working on the body of his car, I'm not the only on this earth eheheh!!!...

Finally the hood is finished, good worpes on the left side and a kind of bump like axe on the center left, this taked around 2hours to repair, and a near a quart of plastic filler, I'll sand the finishing putty in a couple of weeks on the hood and around the car, cauz I'm lost of primer, between I purchase another gallon of primer, I'll do something on the car, like My TC bumper (I just won one on ebay for $49.99:hick: ), and another tricks like that...

AH! I found what I do on the car until I have My primer, sanding with resin #40 grit the f*ck!n gravel guard on the bottom of the car:beatyoass: , I hate this a lot:mad:

vinny that paint i believe ur talking about is called copperhead, stacy david made that color for his project on the show trucks, and chevy addopted it as one of there colors, it was what i was gonna do on my stang, but im not having no gm color on my car f that, gloss black for me

The stangs like Your it's amazing in black with a shiny chrome, But look well too in fire red, boss 302 yellow, orange, or apple green...

My first choice is for BLACK as well:hick:

I'll remain with an update (pics)on My bird when I'm not too drunk to work on it (I have a big family trouble here, so I drink to slow down the pressure) anyway!.

Last layer of finishing putty!...

Just finished the last layer of finishing putty on the Bird, here's a 3 pics of the job,

#1: Right Rear fender.
#2: Left Rear fender.
#3: The TC hood ( bumped hood!)

After that, I'll sand with 220 grit, prime 2-3 layer, and sand with 320 grit, Some other little bumps on the cars, and little rust spots not showed here, cauz not important...

Woops!, refinishing the part at the bottom of the back glass and the trunk, I hate this part:beatyoass:

After finished this, redy to paint, I'll change My bumper cover for a TC bumper cover, removing the front fenders too, clean all non visible parts, paint in black (tremclad), and reassemble the front of the car.

In the LAST I'll sand with a #80 resin grit the

Gravel guard at the bottom of the car, and sand the car completely ready to paint :hick: :hick: :hick: .
