Used roller cams

Just curious of the feasability of using a used stock roller HO cam? With so much less friction and wear on them apposed to the cams of older pre rollers is there much risk in using them so long as they look to be in good shape? I am sure there are a few guys aroundthis board that have gone this route and i am wondering how it worked out for you. Thanks

Not much risk, these cams usually show no wear due to the low friction.
If it doesn't look galled or badly scratched then it will be fine.
Do you have a 5.0L ho already??
If not you cannot use it in the SO motor unless you due the HO conversion.

I have just recently picked up a A9P mass air computer with the sensor,19lb injectors , harness and air inlet tubes, have had a set of Edelbrock heads for quite some time. Just in the process of getting a HO intake and cam and plan on doing the conversion over the upcoming winter. Just have been a bit leary about picking up a used cam. I would like to get a cam a bit better than HO stock but believe there would be issues with the valve clearance with the SO flat top pistons. If anyone knows a better cam that will definately(NO I thinks please) work with the stock pistons and not have clearance issues that would be great! Thanks again.

Would stick with the HO cam and get some cobra 1.7 roller rockers.
Did this on my supercharged HO and it works great, giving about .477" lift compared to the advertised .447" with the stock 1.6 rockers.
Have heard an E-Cam will work with the flat tops but you'll end up paying at least 100.00 for the cam.
Supposedly the stock cams are good upto about 400hp.
Save the 100.00 and get the roller rockers and gain abit more hp and alot less wear on the valve train for the same price.
P.S.just a side note but i seen an explorer 5.0 gt40 style intake on i believe the corral.net not that long ago for 150.00 shipped.
I have an extra HO upper, not sure how much i want for it and shipping would probably be pricey form canada.

Dominator, I'm in Canada...out in Calgary. Let me know what you want for the intake. Postal code is T2T-6R7. Thanks for the advise.

I think tom uses trickflow cams with trick flow heads, I may be wrong though.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

You stick those Ebrocks on a a set of flat tops and you have a recipe for disaster... The large valves will probably hit the pistons even with a stock cam...

Even with the 1.90/1.60 valves ? I didn't get the 2.02 valve heads so i was pretty sure it would be a safe bet...yes/no/maybe so?

I wouldn't try it... AFIK the Trick Flows and the stock E6s are the only heads to work with a performance cam and/or rockers on flattops... The 1.90 heads work with stock pistons that have the small valve reliefs, the 2.02s require aftermarket pistons(or inlarging the stock reliefs)

You might get away with a stock HO cam and the 1.6 rockers...

With the goodies you have you'll be miles ahead to rebuild or buy a performance shortblock...

I'm curious about where you plan to get a used roller cam.  I live in Calgary too and I hardly ever see a 5.0 Mustang at Pick'nPull, just a dozen or so 4 cylinders :yuck: .  Are you going to one of the full serve wreckers or do you have a lead on one.  When I rebuilt my engine I bought a non-roller HO cam from Cetus, the characteristics are similar it's just not roller.  Just something to bear in mind as a fall-back.

I actually picked up a new cam just yesterday from Western Motorsports in Calgary! I was just curious about the use of a used cam more than anything.

Hey 4MYKID and SUM_Weirdo, you've got to bring your TBirds out to the the Wednesday Cruise nites at Home Depot/ A&W across from Chinook Mall Calgary 6:30 pm to past 9. If not this week (rain) then next. These cruise nights draw close to 200+ cars of all types. Maybe try to park our cars next to each other. Also the Calgary Thunderbird Club has its Show n' Shine Aug 26 at Universal Ford, come and join in.
I got my roller cam out of an 86 Stang at Pick n' Pull. The first I got from ebay was SO and the second was questionably scratched. Patience will let you find 90's TBird 5.0's off and on.

I can see where valve-piston interference can happen with the SO flat (partially dished) top pistons and HO cam with performance heads of larger valve size. But what about E6 heads, HO cam and 1.7 roller rockers. Any negative experiences out there? I have 1.7 Comp cam roller rockers to put on this fall or next spring, and still feel a little leary about putting them on. Thanks.
