V8 vs. V6 fuel pump November 28, 2012, 01:18:50 PM I am eventually going to swap a 5.0 into my 86 V6 T-Bird. My car has an in tank fuel pump. Is it possible to just swap a V8 pump for the V6 pump or is there more involved? This is going to be a stock 5.0 used for daily driving. Thanks. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #1 – November 28, 2012, 02:43:02 PM Here's what I did:I bought a gently used 255lb/hour Walbro from a guy on the Corral that was parting a Stang. (This one was one of the good older Walbros that rarely gave a problem)Anyway, I dropped my tank, pulled the pump assembly all apart, and removed the stock pump..just the pump itself, not the whole shebang and swapped in my Walbro. Buttoned it all up, and that was 2.5 trouble years ago....now if I could just sort out my other issue....Anyway, the bigger question you need to address is are you ever going to have any performance mods later on? If so, I'd not consider anything less than a high quality 190lb'er, at least. (Stock is 90lb, and that's for an HO car, stock '88 Tbird for example had a 60lb pump, IIRC). This isn't something you'll just get off the shelf at the local parts jobbers either, not if you want it to last more than a year or 2500 miles. Some will argue, but I've had no good luck with any electric fuel pump from a warehouse parts store. (Oreilly, Autohole, Napa, etc)Just my opinion. Look around on Corral and your local craigslist for Stang guys selling their fuel pumps...look for the guys doing upgrades. Know some Stangbanger swapping on a turbo or nitrous system? He/she just might also be getting rid of a f/p and stepping up in that area. I got lucky, paid 23 bucks shipped for mine Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #2 – November 28, 2012, 02:43:06 PM Put a good pump in that will handle your future needs. No problems. I use a 255 lph pump now. I used a 190 with the 5.0 SO engine. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #3 – November 28, 2012, 02:48:18 PM I replaced my stock TC pump with Walbro 255lph unit about 4 years ago, thinking I was gonna do the HO swap in my TC. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #4 – November 28, 2012, 02:52:17 PM And lest we add some room for doubt...a 255lbh pump will NOT hurt anything if everything else on the car is and will always be stock. The only real reason I bought mine was because A it was cheap, and B, I knew my stocker wasn't going to last much longer, and I was right. Took about an hour and half...have yourself some good jackstands, a nice level smooth place, and a buddy to help ya wrestle the tank back up. Even empty, they're a bit of a pita because they're bulky and odd shaped. Mine made one hell of a difference in power after I got it put in. Quote Selected

I used a large shop floor jack with a transmission cradle adapter on mine. I had it removed and re-installed in about 20 minutes. More than likely you are gonna struggle more with rusted bolts getting it out and then getting it re-aligned when putting it back in. To help with the re-alignment, I used four plumb bobs off of the corners of the tank and marked the floor prior to taking the tank out. putting it back in was as easy as aligning the plumb bobs with the alignment marks on the floor and matching the angle of the bottom of the tank. V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #7 – November 28, 2012, 03:30:21 PM There is a difference in the HO & SO pumps, but I doubt there is any between a 3.8 & SO...Everyone beats their chest about having a 255Lph but is totally unnecessary on anything but a all out modified, and/or boosted engine... I doubt the stock lines fuel & rails will even begin to flow 255Lph... Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #8 – November 28, 2012, 04:05:08 PM Just get get a 255lph pump its a upgrade and youll know you have an upgraded fuel pump down the road if you plan on more hp. Thats what i did when my stock fuel pump hose cracked. And the 255's arent that much more expensive than A 190 or 155 pump. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #9 – November 28, 2012, 04:52:43 PM I got my 255 because I found a killer deal that was even cheaper than a basic stock replacement from Autozone. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #10 – November 28, 2012, 06:24:24 PM ^ same thing. I did mine more for reliability than power increases, but it left the door open for stuff later on, if I ever get past this spell...if not, it will go in the Stang for when I start that project the first week after never..lol Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #11 – November 28, 2012, 09:34:35 PM This is another item I wanted to ask about so when the time comes to do the swap I am prepared. i just wanted to be sure that a bigger pump can be swapped onto the factory hanger. It will be an HO 5.0 so the least it will have is a 190lph pump. I will keep an eye out for Mustang guys selling their unwanted parts. I am not keen on the parts store pumps either. The reliability is not the best.Hey Vinnie, lets see a picture of your access panel to the fuel pump in the Sport. I worked at a couple of import dealers over the years and a lot of their cars have access panels to get to the fuel pumps. Makes it a lot easier. Thanks for the input everyone. Quote Selected

V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #13 – November 29, 2012, 05:35:43 AM The cfi motors jave two pumps, one lift, and one high pressure. I'd personally swap the lines and go 86-88 tyle, but it a bunch of work, especially if parts are rare (such as australia I assume...)When me and mt buddy did his, the first was a cheapie "airtek" that didn't even throw30psi and made all kinds of noise. We ordered a "performance" pump from orileys, and it had a walbro stamp on it. I belive it was 110lph or however they rate it, and was only $10 more then a stock replacement one. Quote Selected
V8 vs. V6 fuel pump Reply #14 – November 29, 2012, 04:44:31 PM Yeah, finding lines is out of the question, i think i'll look at making some up.hopefully i can put a decent pump in tank using the CFI pump bracket. Quote Selected
