Minitub August 30, 2011, 02:24:51 PM I'm going to be running 275-60's and can't get the car low enough with the stock wheelwells. I think I might just cut the stock wells out and add about a three inch strip to them. Has anybody done this or actually properly minitubbed their Tbird / Cougar? Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #1 – August 30, 2011, 05:14:16 PM I have 275 40 17's out back, and they fit great, and there's a lot of tire there. I personally don't know of a tubbed car here, but there may be. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #2 – August 30, 2011, 05:40:31 PM Yeah, there's plenty of room to stuff a big tire under there. The problem is there isn't enough room to put the car down around the tire. I'm going to need the inside of the well to be about where the inside of the shock mount is. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #3 – August 30, 2011, 06:35:34 PM Maybe a mini tub IS the way to go. What size wheels? How much room between the outer fender lip and tire? Quote Selected

I'll be using 15x10's, I won't know how much room I'll have between the tire and outer lip until the housing gets narrowed and I decide on backspacing. Quote Selected

Minitub Reply #7 – August 30, 2011, 07:05:32 PM What suspension setup are you going with for the lowering of the car? I always wonder about ride quality and being able to take a speed bump at a realistic speed. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #8 – August 30, 2011, 07:31:22 PM I'm using coilovers all the way around and all Team Z suspension. It is 100% race car. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #9 – August 30, 2011, 07:46:42 PM You may want to do a little searching on the site. I don't recall the name of member, but he has a couple Birds with big blocks (460Tbird?). I know he has one w/295-15 and I think he's fit 325's under another with stock wheel wells. My car sets low and I've put a set of 275-60's on mine with a Turbo Coupe width rear end and 6.5" back space with no issue (though my wheel width is a bit small at 8", the tire section width is comparible). A Mustang would be a problem. I've had to roll the fender lip and beat the inner fenders to get the same tire under my Mustang. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #10 – August 30, 2011, 07:55:22 PM Yeah, I saw that he had 325-50's with the stock wells but the car sits too high. I like my stuff to be SLAMMED. Do you have any pics of how low your car is with 275-60's? Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #11 – August 30, 2011, 08:15:36 PM Here is a TUB JOB we did. I am in the process of doing my TC . I am going to run 345's on the rear. This car was tubbed all the way to the frame rails. And i also moved the frame rails in. A LOT!!!!http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/tfalconier/IMG_0516.jpg Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #12 – August 30, 2011, 09:16:33 PM That's awesome. Do you have any pics of either car from the inside, like through the trunk or through the cabin with the back seat out? I don't intend to go too far with mine, I won't be running anything over a 28x10.5W but it will usually be a 275-60. I'll be notching the frame rail but I can't actually move the rails because I'm staying with stock suspension. I'm only doing this to get the car in the weeds. Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #13 – August 30, 2011, 10:24:16 PM Actually if you are not going to move the rails. Tubbing is just sheet metal fabing. Remember these two things. Never cut both sides at the same time. And never do it with the car on the ground. The car must be on stands level and on a concrete floor, This way the body wont flex. I see people cut both quarters off at once and i cant believe my eyes. I have seen shops do this. The best place to do it is on the frame machine. I know most people do not have access to one. But it can be dun at home with some patients and a little common sense. I will have to take photos of the inside. It is no big deal you loose trunk space HA HA HA!!! Quote Selected
Minitub Reply #14 – August 30, 2011, 10:35:08 PM Here is another angle of the tubs!! Can you see the NOTCH in the frame rail. This is another way of doing it. But you have to install heavy plate inside the rail and weld it in like this photo belowhttp://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c209/tfalconier/IMG_0517.jpg Quote Selected
