custom car insurance, anyone have any suggestions?

It's time to shop around for some insurance, just wondering how you guys have your cougar/tbird..

I will use the car under 3000 miles a year, at the track, and a trip to cat jam..etc

I can see it now I park the car for 20 min somewhere and it's gone,  call insurance company and get a check for $1000 plus contents lol that would really suck ass.

I'm about ready to shop too...I won't dare park mine anywhere except in my driveway. I'll probably need an appraisal for the vert...(when it's done)

I wouldn't tell them about track usage. Geico told me flat out they'd cancel mine when I had the 1st GTO, and I didn't even bring it up!!! I think Eric and Ric both had their cars appraised for a good amount of worth. I believe you have to make a complete list of everything that's been done to it first.

i used hagerty on my 79 camaro, 71 cutlass and now the capri.. only paid 98 a month on the 2 GM's (at separate times) and i pay more for the capri.. i had to get it appraised and i'm paying 213 a month for 8 months on a 1 year policy, because of the 'extremity' of the modifications to the drivetrane and the 'estimated' amount of miles i drive a year

Freedom to enjoy your car
We believe cars are made to be driven. So our policy allows limited pleasure use with no fixed mileage limits. Whether it's a drive on a gorgeous summer day, a trip to the ice cream shop, attending club events or going to shows, you're covered. If you have specific questions about usage, especially if you own a newer vehicle (generally 1990 and newer), we're happy to discuss them with you.

my favorite part.. lol

I have State farm car ins. They offer classic ins. Since I already had them I went ahead and switched my Bird to it and I was able to set the value on it. I think I've had it on it for 7 years now and when I got it I told them I wanted it valued at $15,000. They had to submit it to the company and it was approved. So I've got full coverage on it, I've had to replace the windshield a couple of years ago and they covered it without a problem.

We have had our Cougar appraised at a value of $10,000 and given a copy to the Insurance company for their records. :poke:

Keep in mind that State Farm is stated value insurance and Haggerty is agreed value insurance.  Big difference if you ever have to file a claim.

I got a quote from Hagerty for $565/y.  That includes $15k in guaranteed value, $0 deductible or comp and collision, 50 miles of towing, and 100k/300k liab and 100k/300k unin motorist, 100k prop damage, $1500 tools in trunk, and 5k medical. For miles I said 3,000/yr

I'm happy with that, mostly its high cause I live in the city.  Also I listed primary storage as outside driveway (promised wife she can use garage this winter.. I've had it for 9 years :) LOL )

I sent the application just need to provide some pictures when I get home.

Just went on a few sites to see how much of a difference there is...

1986 Cougar, highly modified, locked garage in Ohio, agreed value of...well, high for these cars. ;)

Hagerty - $763/year
Grundy - $593/year
Heapen 15 - $958/year
American Collectors - $711/year

Meanwhile, my current insurance policy lets me drop to just fire/theft during the winter (that was $46) and add full coverage in the summer ($140).
Also, several of them have told me in the past that if I want to drive the car to work, that voids the policy. F that.

For me, it's not worth moving to any other company.

But if I were in a state with high insurance rates to begin with (read: East Coast) then this may be a cheaper option for you.
Definitely shop around and also don't be afraid to call them, as they may be able to do better over the phone.

Cool thanks for the info, I'll try Grundy tomorrow and maybe get a better price between them and Hagerty
