Congrats on the garage improvements.  Keep us updated on the progress!

Your garage (before your addition) is about the same size as mine.  Its really tough finding the room to store things AND still have room to work on the cars.  I have two lawnmowers and two cars in mine and it gets pretty cramped at times (my loft is full of junk from the original owners that I need to throw away).

It always is annoying to me that I have to move one of the cars just to get the lawnmower out.  I was spoiled growing up because my Dad has a huge pole barn w/heat,etc.

It's pretty surprising how small an old garage can be.  Mine was built for a Model T type vehicle - 12' long and no doors to speak up.

You must have a good system to keep the lawn equipment and the cars in there.  I had given up on having any yard equipment in mine.  Annoying is a mild word when trying to juggle that stuff around the cars.

I didn't mention what I did with all my stuff from inside the garage.  My wife suggested looking into a POD.  It was a great suggestion, but to have it on-site was a considerable expense.  I looked into the Rubbermaid snap together sheds and purchased a 10X7 for less than the POD rental (I used a boat load of American Express points to buy Home Depot gift cards...).  Popped in up in about 3 1/2 hours (it's on my deck for now) and emptied the garage.  The best part is:  When the garage is done, I can move/hide the shed behind it and have more storage space.

so what's with the hole in the floor? looks a little too close to the door to be for a lift lol

Yep, that's for the lift.  The angle of the photo may be decieving.  Check the one below.

It is older Rotary cantilevered low rise lift.  It moves the car forward 12" at full lift, so there is quite a bit of room behind the car, once it's up.  I used to have the T-Birds rear bumper tight to the door, raise the car and the front bumper was tight to the wall!  It made it fun to get around the car...

I had the hole shifted forward about 12" from the previous location.

When the recess is finished it will be 3" deep.  This will allow pick up pads to pivot freely, but allow drive over clearance (I had to drive up on boards before).

You guys mentioned pods, I bought, for my 1972 Olds Cutlass 442, one of the pre fab buildings.

I looked into everything I could find, the units from Lowe's and Home Depot, looked into pods, and even a shipping container and this is what I ultimately came up with. It sits on a 4inch gravel pad, fully assembled on delivery, locking, and seems to be all around great. Don't want to hijack, just sharing what I did.

Why thank you. It's actually a 12x 24 building, it just seems smaller in the pics. So its a standard 1 car oversize garage. For the money, I couldn't beat it, and its built very very sturdy.

And the steel work has started.

Check out the cribbing at the back that will be used to get the monster beam in place.

The company I bought it from was http://www.decksplus.com/ Ask for Dan Metzler, he's the owner. He hooked me up with a great deal. If you talk to him tell him John from Westborough with the Black Cutlass referred you, I'm sure he'll remember me. The buildings themselves come from a company in the Springfield mass area, Horizon Structures, but they do not sell directly to the public. They will deliver the building, if you driveway allows it, fully assembled on a super state of the art trailor. With the oversize garage door, the side entry door, and two windows it was a little less than $4,500. But it cost me a couple hundred for the site prep, the gravel and site work cost me $300, I got a deal. So for a garage built like a house, with plenty of room for my 1972 Cutlass(bigger than a bird), with a 30 year warranty, I couldn't complain.

Slow week on the project.  Cold weather hashiznit suddenly and hard.

Some interesting shots of how steel beams are raised when there isn't access for a crane.

In the center picture, you can see the new plate bolted to the studs on the side wall for joist hangers.  That will be the new height of the ceiling of the garage/floor of the loft.  It illustrates the added head room in the loft.

These guys don't use nails.  Everything is screwed together.  Might not be new, but it's new to me.

What!? You're running out of room in a 20x 50?! How, what do you own a tractor trailor truck?!

86 t-bird: The building is looking nice. I wish I could have built my own,...someday.
