The CP autox bird

1987 tbird - think it was a 302 car.

I know it doesnt look like much now  , but it is actually pretty darn clean underneath as far as I can tell.  But what do you expect for $200

heres the parts car.  Going to be using alot of it and probably parting the rest.  Think the front end will be going on the car getting built.  And I drove it around this afternoon.  Not only was the timing belt broken, the plugs were awful, and the fuel tank has a major leak dumping all the fuel out.  It leaves a trail  4 hrs and $15 and I can drive it around which I think is quite funny

started tearing apart the parts car for this this week!  Finally got a spot at the shop that I can tie up for a while

I am not sure exactly what I'm going to do, but I think I may just rewire the whole car.  I can probably loose at least 50# that way.  Get rid of everything I can behind the dash and still meet scca rules.

Well, I've gotten off my ass and started working on this.  Spent quite a while sing all the sound deadener off the floor, all 38# of it.  The carpet that was in there was 40# in itself.  Waiting on coilover parts and c/c plates for the front.  messed up a new balljoint trying to put it in tonight so I'm a bit pissed about that.  Also realized I need a couple new doors because the bottoms are rotted out and not attatched to the skin anymore.  Also got the new wheels I'm going to widen(thanks for finding those tony!)

Everywhere there is gray, there was sound deadener :jawdrop:

roof inside - not much sound deadener up there

Front suspension - whats left of it, lol.

Dug out my spare T-5 for use in this car. - needs a good pressure washing though

wheels

About where they will end up when I widen them two more inches to 18x12

front spring rate?
are you retiring the 88?
what are you planning that will force you into CP?
the wheels look to be one piece? you gonna have weldcraft widen them?
CP rules will allow geometry changes, are you gonna redrill that Kmember for better LCA locations?
thru floor SFCs???

Front springs are 7" 750's.  Dad had them laying around so I thought I'd try em.  Not that hard to change.

The 88 will not be retired, since it will be called into duty when I break this one, lol.

Its going in cp because I just can't compete against the soon to be SM national champion Dave sutton.  I just know he's gonna do it.  His evo 10 is  FAST, but he's still an douche.

The interior will be entirely stripped out.  Removing any sound deadener throws you out of SM and truthfully CP looks easier.

The wheels are one piece, but I was going to widen them myself.

I thought I read in the rules that you couldnt go to an aftermarket kmember, but there must be ways around it since the 11 time national champion has a full tube front frame on a 65 mustang so I havent figured that out.  Currently in region, I am already seconds ahead of fully built cp mustangs on slicks.

I havent fully decided what I'm doing for SFC's.  I just have weld on ones on the 88, and I could lift a front tire with it and seemed pretty stiff actually.  Seriously trying to keep weight down on this car.  Already sed 38# of deadener off the floor, carpet was 40#, didnt weigh the dash, but thats gonna stay out, and I have to see what else I can cut out of the inside.  Shooting for featherweight(2800 min with the weight penalty on the wheels)

I just love this kind of stuff...this is an awesome project.  Keep us updated!

Holy jeez that parts car was rusted beyond belief!!  Those front frame rails/shock towers were SCARY.

modified stock k-member fits here:
Quote from: 17.8.B.2
Suspension pick up points on the chassis or structure may be re-
located. If such points are relocated, there shall be a metal panel,
covering, or bulkhead separating the driver from the suspension
components.
and here:
Quote from: 17.2.C
The chassis, frame, or subframe may be notched or cut and brackets
may be added for the purpose of attaching alternate suspension or
drivetrain components, except that the firewall may not be modifi ed
for engine block or cylinder head clearance. Holes may be cut to
provide clearance for authorized suspension and drivetrain compo-
nents, through their entire range of travel. Additional structure may
be added in order to attach allowed components to the chassis.
tubular stuff fits here:
Quote from: 17.2.D
Replacement of any chassis component (e.g. subframe) in its en-
tirety by one of alternate construction, unless specifi cally permitted,
shall result in the vehicle being “in excess” of these rules and weight
penalties and/or competitive adjustments may apply.

since you have it mocked up with the stock k-member i didnt figure you were planning on tubular, but there are modifications that can be done to the stocker that will help too.

i feel your pain on being competitive in SM, not that my car is even technically class "legal." my issue is i dont want my car to be a CP car(i like my interior and fenders, thank you), and there isnt anyone runnin CP here anyhow.

I'm especially lacking because I really have done VERY little to the suspension on my other bird.  Shocks/struts, bushings, boxed control arms, no rear swaybar, bigger front swaybar, and stock springs.  I'm sure that I've gotten everything I can out of that combination and the need to drop weight is the biggest factor of all I believe.  I am currently leading sm points, but will probably loose out to a camaro that has coilovers and bigger swaybars and 315's all the way around.  I can't get bigger than 295's on the front of mine even with serious fender rolling.

This is an awesome thread.  Love the work so far.  What are you going to be doing with that cherry red dash??  :hick:
My car is a gravity hybrid.  The gasoline engine gets me up the hills, and gravity gets me down.

That dash is actually cracking up pretty bad(still solid, but broke where I had to take stuff out), but I will probably start parting that parts car out soon!

Slightly OT, that's a wild paint job on the donor.  Got any info on it?

I think they were bored and rattle canned it.  Were about 15 black paint cans in the trunk, empty, along with a set of brake rotors that were worn down to the vents.  Car had a broken timing belt, so that tells you how much care it got.
