Fun times at work today...not really

So my buddy, at work, brings in one of his 24" wheels and 61" tires for his wheelin' truck...we were slow and figured we'd mount it up.  Mounting it wasn't the problem...3 guys, 4 bars and PLENTY of lube and it went on fairly easily.  Now the problem is...how the hell are we going to bead it up?  NO inner-tube...hmmm....tried the starting fluid trick a few times...no go...the gaps between the bead of the tire and the rim was just too big...

So, we lifted up one of our lifts(in ground type) rolled the tire under the arms, standing up and let the lift down to try and force the beads of the tire closer to the rim...keep in mind, it's a GIANT 8-ply 61" V-bar tire...easily weighs 350lbs+.  We tried starting fluid again, but still no go...can was  near empty...

As I was getting our "bead blaster" tank all air'ed up, this friggin' guy decides to get a fresh can of starting fluid and try again...he's spraying it good and I'm minding my own business about 8 ft away, not paying attention to him...then I hear starting fluid burn, then the loudest BANG...and then I couldn't hear anything...took about a minute before I could hear again...rattled peoples framed ASE certs off the wall in the front office (about 35ft away), scared waiting customers right out of the waiting room and even managed to shake some mortar joints loose!....

The tire was destroyed...junk...seated the outter bead so hard, it tore the steel cords in the bead of the tire(which is a little over an inch thick) and went right past the rim lip...after further inspection, it also tried to shoot this 180lb rim out of the back of the tire...luckily it only hit one of the posts for the lift and dented the hell out of this wheel.....my buddy was 3-5ft away when he lit it off and was missing hair from his left arm...like, his whole arm....takes a lot to freak this guy out....but that was enough...lol.

All I could do is look at him and say, "I don't want to play this game anymore"...lmao...at least we're not screwing around with split rims or anything...that was the original plan, with 54" military spec Michelin's....then he got a deal on these 61" monsters...looks like he's got to go find another.

Just a quick look into my hazardous day...

Yeah, it was a frightening situation that could've gotten dangerous real fast...but, as soon as I realized everything was okay and none of the show-room glass was blown out, it was pretty  funny.

I know of a guy that owns a tire shop around here who lost a good part of his face using starting fluid to seat beads.

I know around here when I was younger we took our Super Low pro's out to the tractor tire place. They used a huge strap around the tire and then would just air it up. Worked every time I was there. Glad everyone lived and not missing body parts or burnt and getting skin graphs. Seems some times we need to pay more attention what others are doing.

i work at a walmart tire and lube. Not everybody that works with me is as mechanically inclined as we are. so heres a list of F-ups from my fellow "Techs".
1 turbo for a pt cruiser- $2400, left the lid off the airbox
3 complete engines- $8700, everyone was caused by a double        gasket on the oil filter
1 van, balancer, and medical bills + ambulance ride-$20,000 one of our new greeters was driving onto a lift and hit the gas instead of the brake, ran over a tech and smashed the van and balancer
Countless towing bills, studs, rims, and a hood but thats a long story- who knows the amount racked up in those things
working with a bunch of jacka$$es- priceless

I've had a lot of jobs, three of my favorite toys with those guns were....

3) shooting ink pens through a pressure washing wand with an air chuck. (not intentionaly at each other, but there were some close calls. lol

2) fire hose fights working for and industrial cleaning company in the power plants. (not full pressure of course)

1) Huck bolt fights with huck bolt guns. lol (those things actually hurt pretty bad.) lol

Reminds me of wrapping paper into a cone and taping it to a 10 penny nail stuck through the tip of the cone from the back, then shoving it into a tube followed by an air coupler. One quick connection to the 100 psi air line sent the nail through 3/4" plywood.  :rollin:

I've been lit on fire and run over at work...more like run into and I held onto the grille guard while yelling and throwing my hammer...both by the same guy in about a 3 week time span...apparently I was the a-hole for yelling about it...gee, I was almost killed TWICE!...lol.  kids these days.

I had my head hit with a 25# sledge hammer and the guy swinging it wasn't small.

We ran over a chunk of curb in a new build commercial area. We were setting up to do cable through out the area, and couldn't get it out. We decided that the best way to get it out was to pry on it with a crow bar, and then hit it with a sledge. We made it to hit in 8 foot ground rods. Its about 2 feet long, and litterly a 25 pound hammer welded to a hollow pipe. The sledge didn't fit between the dullies, so I got volunteried to hold the dig bar. I was staying as far away from the bar while holding it for obvious reasons. While I was bent over my hard hat fell off. I bent over to pick it up.

The next thing I know I have two guys standing over me freaking out. I honestly though I just slipped and fell over backwards. We put an ice pack on my head and I drove home. Later that night after it started to swell, it bled all over in my hair and ruined my pillow. It didn't hurt at all after it happened. My head was killing me the next day. When i showered I could peel my hair back at least three inches in a half moon shape. A small chuck of hair grew in white, the rest didn't grow back over the scar. I think I'm lucky to be here at all.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
