Hopefully this year is better

Im not really sure i want to tell to many people about this  but i figured were all about these cars here so  i can pretty much say that with the way i drove at the track last year a yugo could have done the quarter faster=[      It was right after i got her and she still had an open rear w 2.73's  and with these v-8's only making 140 hp i ran a 17.3 at like 78.53mph.  Im hoping this year after gutting the ac system,removng the smog , full length duals,and a rear swap she'll go a lil better. If i can get her into the 15's (not really that much better) im thinking about doing a heads and cam swap maybe a different intake and fuel delivery system t try and get it up to 300hp.  Just to have a tire frying good time.... What are your overall plans for the car? The way to go would be to swap to a slightly newer mustangs engine from 87-93. You would probably have to do some wiring to make it all work, but 225 hp is fairly cheap if you go the junkyard route.

i'm thinking 351w heads,cam,intake and carb and maybe a 6al to fire it all. I was going to keep it sleeper looking with all stock ford parts but our year mustang with cfi had the same injectors as it does and there classed as H.O.s

not all H.O's were created equal. If your going to go 351, you may as well stroke it and really make some power out of it. 300hp should be more or less starting if you spend alittle bit of money on some parts. The way to go would be to go carbed, or real EFI. I would like to see some people build up the CFI set ups, but parts are non-existant.

I think you need to do some reading on SBFtech.com, or read the coolcats tech section on the H.O. upgrade. With a good suspension and tires, you should be able to hit 14's with a stock 87-93 motor.

true  the main reason i wanna keep the original powerplant is because its only got 87thou on it and i got it last year with 75

I'll tell you one thing right now...  you will not even GET IN the 15's without an HO....  My best time with my '85 5.0L Cougar, was 16.1 @ 88mph My stone stock XR-7 tied it with a 16.1 @ 88mph

swap to an HO and skip the 15's and be right in the 14's....

My first '88 'Bird went 16.45 stone stock.  After JUST swapping in an HO it went 15.20's-15.30's.  I dropped about another second off that time with just a few simple bolt-ons...If I had a nice 2600-2800 stall convertor in it, it probably would have gone high, high 13's on the right night.  Try not to go over-kill on one particular area of the car...instead look at the complete package...a lower power car, with the right combination of parts, can out-perform a higher powered car anyday of the week.

Don't be embarrassed by your times. At least you ran your car at the track, which is more than most can say. Take little steps, it will be worth it in the end.

do a hydrollic roller conversion on the stock block and change ti all over with newer mustang parts.

I ran in the 14s my first year with an old 302 with about 100,000 miles on it. The key was lightening the car and reargear change. My t-bird was built with old tech and used parts. I being upgrading and now close to running 12s. Start small by changing onething at a time and still driving it. You do not need to go crazy to get into the 14s.

Thanks guys, i talked to a buddy of mine yesterday with a 900hp linc mark vii and were going and getting a Linc 5.0ho and tossing it in. Gonna keep it speed density for now and see what she does. I figure with the H.O. the stang rear and the aod its kinda like having a mustang in bird clothing=]  And the best part is with the low miles on mine everything comes apart and minus the motor he has EVERYTHING i need to swap it in=]  I'll keep everyone updated with pics and what not

+1 on the higher stall converter. My T-bird has trapped at 94-95 MPH in the quarter but the best ET I've gotten had been a 15.1:hick: A combination of needing a higher stall converter and my lack of driving skill is holding the car back.

I think elevation is hurting you too...your set up would be an easy 14.0 combo(or better) any day of the week over here at Atco Raceway...with some DR's, easy 13 second ride.

I'm not racing in that high elevation. I race at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Il. I just suck at driving :hick: I've been to the track about 4 times. Plus the old 14" Tiger Paws would spin 30-40 feet down the track...did I mention I suck at driving? :hick:

Nan  just heat the hell outta the tigerpaws=]  i must say though that mustang rear really brought my tires to life. i went out by a highschool car show yesterday cause i knew they werent allowed to do anything fun and put some nice marks down. Its the first time my babys ever done a 3/4 of a block burnout with little foot jacking=] and the kids loved it...
