fuel leak

My 88 Tbird has been parked for the winter. It has developed a nasty fuel leak, it appears to be coming from the center of the fuel tank, and from the general location of the fuel pump, it also only leaks when the car is running.

Any ideas before i get her in the air to take a peek.

Thanks
Jeff

I take it that the leak is on the top side of the tank then?

Yes the leak appears to be coming from above the tank.

It sounds like the seal right above the fuel pump. You're going to have to drop the tank to change, you might as well change the pump while you have it down.

Could also be one of the lines going in right there as well.

You know thats a common misconception from movies that cars explode. Cars don't explode, they just spill the contents of their gas tank after it melts then burst into flames. Far from an explosion.

Replace the big o-ring and the seal for the return line.

Since it only leaks when the car's running I'm gonna put my money on it being the lines. More specifically, the nipples on the pump hangar, where you attach the factory plastic lines.

Mine was fine siting still because the gas wasn't moving, but when I'd drive, the gas was sloshing around and it would make it's way out of the seals. While the tank is down, that's the time to check everything, also the seal on the side for the filler.Let us know what you find.We need an end to the story.

Hello everyone

In the end it turned out everything but the fuel pump was shot. So i got a new tank, lines, sending unit and home made straps to hold the tank in.

$640 canadian dollars later and all is good.

Time to go take her out for here first cruise of the year.:burnout:
