Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! January 01, 2008, 12:52:20 AM I had a thread about this awhile ago, looks like it got deleted or something...Anyway,I'm still in the market for a compressor, I may not make a purchase until spring/summer when i can start doing body work on the 'bird. But in the meantime i've been checking around in classifieds, ads, and what not and have yet to find anything worth while in the $400 range.I was kind of set on the 4hp 29gal 220v (14.5cfm@90psi) from Harbour Freight, But now i hear that they inflate the cfm ratings on the compressors they sell... and that they arent made very well... Anyone have any experience with them?I also just got back from a local puppies shop and found an older compressor that looked like it may have potential, But needs some repair as well, And im not sure if it can be fixed...The compressor was a "3HP Charge Air Pro" by Ingersoll Rand.couldnt find the cfm ratings, but it had listed all the tools it could handle and named pretty much everything (i would be using at least). The tank was about 20-27 gal (horizontal), And was rated at 115v.they were originally asking 249.99, But they put it on 50% off because it is leaking oil.Anyone know if this worth getting/fixing? It's leaking oil just below the fins. This is basicly it, this one looks a tad newer~But same layout:http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02108a.jpg***BIG PIC Quote Selected

Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! Reply #2 – January 01, 2008, 01:14:05 AM i dont know about their large compressors but the small one i bought from them is a piece of . goes thru oil like crazy, constantly cracking sight plastic and when coupled with one of their pos nailguns it barely has the power to shoot nails into door moulding. the stuff they sell is fine for a job or two but for constant daily use in my opinion not worth the savings. Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! Reply #3 – January 01, 2008, 06:06:18 PM This is the Harbour Freight one i WAS set on:http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92504I'm hearing bad things about there quality now though...Otherwise im lost again as to what shoot for locally other than keeping an eye out like i've been doing for used stuff. Except that lowes has a decent Kobalt 60gal for $399 that looks pretty nice.Any ideas on the above mentioned puppies Shop find? it should be about 10.0cfm at 90 or 40psi and only cost about $125 at the 50% off.I just need to know if the oil leakage is a fatal sign?... Or if i should steer clear of it? or what? Quote Selected

Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! Reply #5 – January 01, 2008, 08:59:35 PM Ok, So i found a killer tip on a Closeout of some 60gal Kobalts at some Lowes stores...However it hasnt worked out too well for me, I have one more try at it though. :hick:But you guys should to call your Lowes stores and ask if they have: Item #134819 or Model k7060HFV in stock (Kobalt 7hp 60Gallon)Some people are finding these compressors (that were originally priced at about $500) for anywhere from $99 to $450 and closeout price right now!I called any lowes near us and they were all out them except one... Which has a few left at the closeout price of $449?... Apparently the closeout pricing is per store. My last try will to try and find someone who purchased one for the $99-250 range, And have them scan there receipt for me so i can get them to price match it for me. :hick:Heres the compressor:http://www.mastertoolrepair.com/k7060hfv-p-2942.html Quote Selected

Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! Reply #7 – January 02, 2008, 02:18:25 AM Ok!I've got a print out of someones purchase of one for $249.Now, i'm really hoping they will price match...A couple problems i see is that the purchase was made on 11-02-07 and was made in Texas, Heh.They should be able to call the store (Long Distance?) and still have the records of the price in the computer though... even though they are sold out.At least i hope they can.Heres the in store stuff:http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=pg&p=CustServ/ServicesAnd the receipt:http://a.slickdeals.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=60150&d=1194050501 Quote Selected

Compressor Shopping - Victory!!! Reply #10 – January 03, 2008, 10:55:16 AM I looked at both the Lowes Kobalt and also the red Husky 60 gal at Home Depot and was comparing the two. As a general rule I prefer shopping Lowes but in this case I chose the Home Depot 60 gal for a few reasons. 1) Recommended by my brother in law that framed my house, He’s a contractor and uses compressors a lot and this is what he uses at home and it has been working good for him for 5 years. 2) SOME of the Home Depot 60 gals were duel cylinder compressors (some of them, same price, same color, were only single.. odd! I asked and they told me the duel cylinder models are the new ones replacing the singles) all the Lowes Kobalt were single cylinder. I opted for the duel cylinder for $100 cheaper than the Lowes single. It shouldn’t have to work as hard as a single. It has been set up in my pump house now for almost a year and has been used for an Impact driver to run 5/8x4 lag bolts into the side of the house to hold the deck on, Spraying the inside of a 1600 sq foot house, Nail guns and just general all around spraying things off and has been flawless. I heard horror stories of compressors loosing there oil and burning up so I check the oil in the sight glass regularly and it hasn’t lost a drop. I sprayed the entire living room (till my arms couldn’t take any more) then passed the sprayer off to a friend who finished the room off and it took maybe 60 sec of running for the compressor to catch back up with us. So far I’m extremely happy with the Home Depot 60 gal upright. It’s exactly what I was looking for. Quote Selected
