You're told by the board software that you can only post ten times in a 1440 minute period, and you wasted five of them here. That's using 'em wisely...***********************************************************************************************************************Here's the poop on the situation: There has been a new bit of software installed in the hopes of freeing up server load and uncluttering the boards. I searched for ways to streamline the board software because we've been going over our CPU cycles allotment on our server, and we've been having complaints that the board is going to hell in a handbasket because a few "post ws" have been cluttering up just about every thread. This is the best method I found to take care of both problems. I didn't pipe up earlier because I wanted to make sure the script was working.In addition to some actual tweaks to the board software, this new script operates in the background monitoring things and makes changes as necessary. One of the things it monitors is the amount of CPU bandwidth that individual users are using (making posts is a big CPU hog, bigger than attaching pics or linking to images), and once it picks out users that are using too much it flags them and their posts. Their posts are then checked by a select and anonymous group of people for whether they are relevant to the topic at hand. Users with a high post-per-day count AND a high ratio of irrelevant posts (that is "AND", by the way, not "OR" - more on that in a moment) are flagged as "POST WS" (yes, that is the name of the script) and measures are taken to slow them down.Note that I said "Post per day" AND "relevance". Users can make as many posts per day as they want, without fear of being flagged a "w", as long as they're relevant. Once you're flagged, though, all posting ability is limited. It's those useless posts like "I wanna buy it but can't afford it" and "I don't have that model car, but if I did I'd want one", and "I don't have any idea what your problem is, but I'm posting in your thread anyway", and "I don't have anything useful to add to this thread, but here's something completely unrelated that I did to MY car" that we pick up on. That is why I said earlier in this thread to "make 'em count". Consider it "foreshadowing" :DAlso note that this is not an iron-clad rule. This is not a police state in which every post you make has to mean something. Occasional, indeed, even fairly frequent "useless" posts and threads are perfectly OK. It's the ones that seem to make it a career (ie "post w") that the rule takes aim at....And another note: It's not permanent. The script "learns" based on percentage of posts marked "Irrelevant". Once you've been flagged it keeps an eye on you for a while. Continue "whoring" and the script tightens the screws. If it "sees" you changing your ways it will gradually lift the restrictions. Go back to your old ways and the script will "w slap" you again........And finally, and perhaps most importantly: PM's are next. Due to numerous complaints of abuse of the PM system (and due to the fact that the whole PM system takes up a LOT of CPU bandwidth) there will soon be a similar script installed to take care of that. Since I'm obviously not going to dictate what can be said in PM's it will simply be a matter of finding those who are sending too many and placing limits on them. The long and the short of it: We are not trying to single anyone out. There are over 2500 members of this forum and we have got to keep it running as smoothly as possible for everyone. That includes keeping threads uncluttered, limiting "hijacking", and sharing the limited bandwidth. Any decisions on who becomes a "w" are not taken lightly and are made based on recommendations from the new software and post relevancy. It's high time this board was brought back to "the way it was", and this is the first (and hopefully last) step toward doing so. Quote Selected
