New truck idea...

Sooo, since you guys have pointed out just how under-whelming the Nissan Frontier SC is, I started doing a little soul-searching. I need a full size, half-ton pickup. That's all there is too it. I started looking at GMC's and Chevy's with the LSx motors but the styling is bizarre and the interiors disappoint in the extreme.

Then a friend of my neighbors dropped by today...
With a F150! It was a black 04 SuperCrew 2WD with the 5.4 and chrome package. Man what a SHARP looking truck! And the Lariat interior is quality. I can't stop thinking about it!

So I did some research, I think I want an 04-07 F150. It can be 2 or 4WD, it really doesn't matter. A posi-equipped 2WD is the preferred. It HAS to have the 5.4. The 4.6 is a joke in the SuperCrew and the 5.4 will actually tow a car trailer with car. I really want a Lariat. The interior is such a step up from the base models!

I can have all of that, with less then 40,000 miles, for less then $20,000. Heck, most were less then $18K!!

I'm going to do some test drives and really look hard at these. I have quite a bit of time, since I have to fix the Nissan and gradumatate from skoool first. (May 08) That gives me almost a year to sell the Nissan, save some money, and find the truck I want as my graduation present. I know the better half will approve it! (4 doors, heated seats, child car-seat safe, 5-star crash test, newer, RELIABLE, etc, etc)

Anybody own one? Driven one? Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

I work at a new/used car dealer.  I've driven every possible used truck available.  My favorite, the F-150.  The GM trucks have the worst interior available.  They feel flimsy and the dash is way to high.  The Dodge is just funny looking.  Now the F-150, sitting inside of it you feel like you're on a booster seat.  The dash is so low profile and the windows are so low you can see everything.  By far the easiest truck to drive.  Not to mention your crew cabs get that fancy rail system on the roof of the cab to mount DVD screens and other stuff.  Hell the stock light slides back and forth!

CougarSE - I agree 100% on the GM interiors! The 5.3/5.7/6.0 LS-based engines are great but if I had to sit in that interior every day I might as well stick to my Nissan! I actually don't like the roof-rail console setup, but I want a moonroof F150 anyways ;)

stuntmannick - My senior Engineering thesis in college was on E85 ethanol. I know all about it ;) Corn is the future, I'll take the higher octane, cleaner emissions, American jobs, and still pay only $2/gallon.

I'm definitely sticking with the 04-07's. After looking at a few 01-03's today I couldn't run away fast enough! The interior was worse then a 87 Mustang (and that was a LARIAT to boot!), the bed was really small on the inside, and the whole thing just felt well, DATED.

I really, REALLY like the 04-07 Super Crew's. The FX2 Sport seems ideal for me, but they are actually kind of hard to find! The FX4 would be an OK fit, but I just don't need 4-wheel-drive anymore. The Lariat would really suit me, but the better half wouldn't like the leather. I have an appointment tomorrow at the Ford dealer. They have 18 used ones and 27 new ones with 5.4's to look at.

My favorites are the Black FX4 and the Red Lariat. The Lariat's wood trim and gauge package are really nice! I could live with the FX4's gauges and interior though. I really like the Black FX4's look. I think a Black FX4 with Black cloth interior, tow package, the 5.4, and a moonroof would be the dream truck.

Do what my Dad did.

Buy a '91 Silverado, throw a 383 in there, DynoMaxes, and you have a great daily driver.

I will agree with you though, their interiors do suck.

Yuck. Old chevy pickups with SBCs and noisy exhaust is the big thing around here.

Though they generally just keep stock motors that dont really make any real power. Rednecks.
