Console lid...thin or thick?

I have an '87 that was built in 12/86 and has the thicker console lid that has the recess running down the middle, but I'm curious about the other one that has the latch visible. So I thought I'd ask the question: which do you all prefer? The thin smooth one or the thick one with the line down the middle?

After 20 years I've concluded it's the thicker one, by far. It's padded better, has a hidden latch, comes in colors, and squeaks a little less. The thinner lids are more fragile and therefore more pr0ne to cracking; I've got a whole collection of cracked flat lids laying around. Also, when the flat lids are slammed down (which nobody should ever do but uninformed passengers usually do anyhow LOL), they're harder for which to find spare parts. I've seen very few thicker lids crack like that. However, the tops of the thicker lids could eventually split, exposing the foam underneath and making them next to impossible to repair. I really haven't seen that happen but as these cars and parts get older, that potential is certainly there.

For aesthetics, the flat lids seem to fit the car better. I have a flat lid in the convertible, and the thicker lid in the '84. I like them both as they each have their purposes. Since the '84 is just a cruiser, the stock colored lid fits the car's interior nicely, and it's more comfortable too. On the convertible, I really wanted a thicker lid but didn't want to paint one; it had to be covered in leather to match the seats. So the only logical choice was the flat lid. It squeaks and all, but so far it's holding up, and it's fairly easy to clean (thank God for Magic Erasers!). I couldn't paint the latch part since my fingers would undoubtedly wear the paint off, so I left that charcoal. It looks good, functions well enough, and let me customize it the way I wanted to.

The one huge advantage of the flad lid, then, is the fact that the leather can be replaced rather easily, in any color you wish.

As I said, they each have their own purposes. But for my money I'd always go with the thicker lid, especially for the color choices.

Me :hick:

Eric has them listed on CoolCats somewhere too. They take FOREVER to ship (I ordered 5 weeks ago) but the lid cover itself is very nice. I'd keep 2 in stock if you guys don't mind a few extra dollars to get them 4.5 weeks earlier.

LOL. Mine is "warn". Its in great condition minus where you can start to see foam underneath the maroon color of the lid.

You will be hard pressed to find a thin lid with an intact Latch.

Eric,
Those are both the same one. It's actually hard plastic like the dashboard. I figured since nobody has ever bought one that I'd give it a shot. It's a very high quality piece and fits over my nice tall lid very well. I can take some pics if you'd like.

I like the comfort of driving my 84 T-Bird with my left elbow on the door armrest and my right elbow on the thick console lid.

Just a little FYI on the flat lids.
Cougar XR-7's & Turbo Coupe's built after May of 1984 are supposed to have the flat lid and it was covered with black** leather. The non XR-7's & Turbo Coupes that were able to be ordered with a full console and had the flat lid (later model) were covered in black vinyl.

**Exception - 1984 XR-7 console lids were Oxford Gray instead of Black.

Eric, I'm not trying but bust your balls here, just weren't sure if you were aware that they were made in both materials.
