Getting there...

The car is starting to show some progress again, after two solid weeks of 40 degree temperatures (the garage has a wood stove but I'm out of fire wood). I'm going slowly, taking it panel by panel. I'm also being very fussy about it, taking all the trim off, the glass out (or, in the case of the windshield and backlight, the trim) and the door handles, lock cylinders, and even the latch bolt thingies that hold the doors closed. I don't wanna have tape marks anywhere on this car when it's painted - I hate it when you look at a freshly painted car and see where everything was taped off.

The left side is just about finished, and I only have some door dings to take care of on the right side door and the right side will be finished. Then the roof (again I wonder how the hell somebody gets "door dings" on a roof, but there are plenty) and the trunk lid. Then it's ready to throw some paint at the bitch! And yes, I will be painting it myself. Should be... um... interesting. There is still some light sanding to be done on just about everything as well, but I'm saving that for when I'm ready to paint.

Looks real good. Sanding is so much fun! NOT! I do it everyday at work. Hardest part about paint and I hear it from highly experienced people all the time is being comfortable with the gun. I have no problem at all painting, its 2nd nature to me. My grandpa paints building interiors. He watched me and told his hired hand to watch me. I flow with the gun and I flow with the contours of what Im painting. Most people are real rigid and try to paint in one position.

Yes, it's Canadian Tire spray primer. You can see a couple of cans of it sitting under the car in one pic. This type of primer has a really nice "fan" style spray pattern, unlike the simple round hole in the cheap stuff's sprayer. One thing I learned: Use primer that comes in a can with a picture of a car on it. When I first started I cheaped out and bought cheap primer. It looked great until I put some white paint down on it (as you can see in the pic, I painted all the edges of the fender while it was off the car to make sure paint got on those areas). As soon as the paint hit the primer, the primer blistered just as if I had put paint stripper on it. I had to redo the whole ed fender, but it could have been worse I suppose - imagine if I'd used that primer on the whole car!

From now on, only automotive grade primer for me :hick: The funny thing about this automotive grade primer is that it soaks into body filler, and the camera flash seems to exaggerate the effect. If you look carefully at the pics (or if you tilt your LCD monitor) you can see every place I had to fill a ding/dent.  Once it's sanded with 320 grit in preparation for paint, though, you can't see those spots at all.

On an unrelated note,I was looking at the cartoon Bird in your sig,and had a thought.....a 72/73 Torino hoodscoop (not the '70/'71 shaker)like that would look really good on a standard hood for our cars.Anyway,I was just wondering about the primer.I have a couple of spots I need to tend to before paint.Thanks.

That scoop is a dead-ringer for a 70 AMX scoop. Which *would* look good on a standard hood. I have one and a hood, maybe it's sawzall time...

I always loved that Torino hood.I didn't think ofthe AMX,though. The Torino is a little more "subtle",if you will. The AMX had a little more of a bulge to it (I said "Bulge"LOL).It would look good either way. Both hoods are a little on the rare side these days.

But of course. Nothing screams "I was in a hurry when I painted it" like door tags that have been painted over. I plan on saving the driver's tags too, although none of the info will be correct anymore, except maybe the VIN. I changed out the interior (from base seats in porno red to TC seats in dark blue), the rear end (from open 7.5 with 2.73's to T/L 8.8 with 3.55's), and the colour (top will still be Oxford White, but bottom will be gunmetal).

It's lookin really good!  I remember when we put the cowl scoop on the Chevelle's hood (it is the original steel hood with a cowl that we grafted on) and my dad's friend is a body guy so he helped A LOT.  And he hand crafted a part of the hood line because it didn't flow perfectly.  I need to get pics of it...he did really well.  Everybody that sees the hood swears it's an aftermarket hood.  But the hours spent sanding it....ugh....yeah.  That makes you really appreciate what goes into well done body work.  I cant wait to see the finished product!
