500 caddy swap? April 10, 2007, 08:47:26 PM I know I've seen someone do a caddy 500 swap in a bird. But I can't find the site. ANyone know of a site that talks about 500 swap? My buddies got a 500 cad out of a eldorado fwd. What trans will bolt on for a rwd application? I might try and see if I can get it from him. Quote Selected

500 caddy swap? Reply #6 – April 12, 2007, 07:49:51 AM For a trans u would have to get a trans From A buick, pontiac oldsmoblie or a RWD Cadillac. Chevy trans wont work unless it has a universal bolt pattern on the bellhousing. Another thing is make sure That the car u get a trans from is not a chevy unless it has a uni bellhousing. Most of the enigines in 80s GM RWD V8 cars were chevy V8s Quote Selected
500 caddy swap? Reply #7 – April 16, 2007, 08:39:50 PM I think the Caddy 501 was the 472 bored out a little further. I know they were a mid-70's thing. My father had a '76 Sedan DeVille with the 501 & I worked for a guy who had a '76 El Dorado Convertible Bicentenial Edition with the 501. They were sooo smogged out... not a lot of power. I do recall Hot Rod had a build up on one that they stuffed into something a lot lighter than a Caddy. The real fun was in the El Dorados of the late 60's. 472 cubes, 370 HP, & nothing more than a PCV valve. Tons of torque steer, but who cared?Turbo86xr7 is right about the tranny. Chevy won't bolt up, but I bet there is an adapter available.Good luck! Quote Selected

500 caddy swap? Reply #10 – April 18, 2007, 10:19:23 AM That Chevette in stock trim probably weighs less than the Caddy engine block. Quote Selected
500 caddy swap? Reply #11 – April 18, 2007, 10:27:25 AM they still have that chevette but they can't register it it won't pass emissions! Quote Selected
500 caddy swap? Reply #12 – April 18, 2007, 01:11:48 PM They (hot rod) also pulled a Caddy engine and cleaned it up, and stuck it in a newer (80's) El Camino, i think stock it ran around a 15, then they done some work, new intake, carb, headers, ignition, and some other little stuff, and i think they got it into the low 12's.A buddy of mine had one of those Caddy's with the 500cid engines...Would leave clouds of tires smoke and piles of rubber whenever he matted the go pedal. Cop loved it when the car finally quit runnin'. Quote Selected
Cad-T-Bird 500 Reply #13 – June 04, 2007, 07:42:01 PM Here's the picture page. http://groups.msn.com/CadTBird/shoebox.msnwThe engine is a 500 not a 501 but a lot of people think this, not much difference anyways. 4.3 x 4.304 The bore and stroke is just a little bigger than the 472.The Cadillac 500 weighs just between a small and big block Chevy. It's a lot lighter than a 460 Ford. The engine I have now is stock, 8.5 to one compression, with a comp extream energy 274 cam and better valve springs. Also have an Edelbrock intake and 3.08 gears.I only ran it once but it did a 13.8 at 99mph that I did not think was too bad for the first time on regular gas. There's no adapter kits for this and you have to make your own. Fits pretty good in the T-Bird and if you want lighter you could do the same in a Mustang coupe. The Eldorado FWD had very little torque steer, both axles were the same and the car was heavy. If you want to find a 500 you need to find a 70 - 76 Eldorado or 76-76 Deville/Fleetwood. Or if you live in the Northwest I have lots of them around for sale.If you want to learn more the best place to go is http://www.cowboyseven.us/forum/index.phpTEDtmdunlap@comcast.net Quote Selected
500 caddy swap? Reply #14 – June 17, 2007, 07:00:22 AM if you use i believe pre 69 closed chamber heads on a post 70 block w/ open chamber heads you get 12.5:1 compression ratio. had a buddy in h.s. had a 69 deville vert we called the attacilac. he did the head swap on a full option car(read heavy) with an adapter plate and 800 cfm vac secondary holley on 93 pump gas w/outlaw 108 octane booster and ran don't remember exactly it was 20 yrs ago about 14.70 at bithlo (orlando speedworld) before they put in the concrete launch pads. oh i almost forgot it had a lincoln locker rear also.
