ok, so first, thanks for the offer daboss351!

Next, 83-86 DID have the option...  it's where I got my system from for my 88 TC.

Removal:  Gotta remove: drivers kick, a-pillar, both visors and clips, gauge bezel, headlight switches and i ended up dropping the column at one point.  I also unbolted the dash so I could pull it forward a bit, not sure if it was necessary.  It was a PITA to pull the harness up from behind the kick panel (it runs down behind the hood release).  Also, getting your hand in behind the switches to unplug the "big connector" was tough, need small hands maybe.  And fishing the harness out of the dash (where they run behind the gauges).  After that, it's just a matter of unplugging then removing three relays from a tree, disconnecting the autodim sensor (don't forget to take this sensor AND mirror) and fishing the upper harness out of the headliner.

I think that's pretty much it.  Took me about 1.5 hours to figure out and remove all the right pieces and about 45 minutes to install.

One more thing to add, the 84-89 Mark VII has the exact same setup, I plan on ripping out the autolamp from an 86 LSC parts car I have and put it in my Cougar when I do the heater core.

Lotsa fun.

Ugh!!!
I dunno what you guys are talking about, That was PITA.

I hit up the yard and found a setup in an 88 'Bird, Took me over an hour to get the whole setup out... And then instead of charging me as whole for the unit i get nickel and dimed for it at the register... *Grumbles*

Are the switches different for an 83-86 and 87-88? 'cuz it looks like im gonna have to make a custom install of the switches out of the '88.

On the way out i noticed (barely) a mashed up Mark and the interior was all nasty and mildewey, But it had the autolamp system as well! No time to get out the wiring (and kind of unwilling to go through that again) I just grabbed the switch panel and the rearview mirror setup.

Nevermind...the Mark VII's wiring is completely different. Not surprised, this car had power everything standard...only the auto dimming mirror had a different harness that was a plug and play affair too.

Negative Batman, I have an 88 XR7 with no auto lamp and just has the jumper behind the headlight switch.

No, it was an option.  Ask the guy who bought his new and remembered seeing a zero option XR-7 with crank windows.

My guess is I unplug the ONE connector that is currently there (then making TWO open connectors) and connect the autolamp harness in between.  Can anyone confirm this...

Ok, which one of the two in the car did you unplug to connect the autolamp harness inbetween?  I got my harness (from an '88) and unplugged the two connectors at the kick panel and connected both of the autolamp's connections in there instead. So I don't know which plug to splice it into.

Note, my car is currently dead with the dashboard removed, so I can't exactly test to see WTF is going on. Thanks. :)
