T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / 1986 Thunderbird V8 For Sale
Before I start spending bigger money on the car I want to see how much I can get for it, if I can break even or close I'm selling it. Here's the list to the. Craigslist ad, I'm in Westchester, NY near White Plains. I would rather sell it to one of you guys anyway. Lol

http://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/cto/4611578117.html

It really is a solid running car, only rust is passenger strut tower, bottom of passenger door and radiator support.

$1,400 OBO 41,500 original miles, lots of new parts.

Engine Tech / A/C Pulley Noise
Well I doubt it will get much hotter here until next summer and it's not my DD anyway, so I had my friend vacuum the system and we put that Dorman bypass pulley on until next year. The system was working great with no leaks. So next year I'll just throw a new compressor on.

For future reference, that bypass pulley works but the hardware sucks. We had to put regular bolts through with lock washers to attach it.

Suspension/Steering / need advice for susp rebuild
I just had most of the stuff in the front end changed recently and it made a big difference. Had ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, sway bar bushings, end links and bearings done. The car had a lot of play in the wheel before the steering did anything, now it's very direct. Still loose because it's the stock rack but night and day difference in responsiveness.

Engine Tech / A/C Pulley Noise
One other question. I'm going to be doing a new clutch kit instead since we're taking it apart anyway. Everything seems to list for pre 3/86 and of course my car has a date of 4/86. Can I just look under an '87 for the AC parts or was there another change from later '86 cars to '87?

I'm also considering this as a temporary solution until next summer: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/rnb-34163

Will this fit my 4/86 T-Bird? It only lists until 1986, were the compressor bolt holes different between '86 and '87?

Thanks.

Engine Tech / A/C Pulley Noise
No one seems to sell just the pulley, it's either the whole compressor or the clutch. Is this a used only part if I don't want to buy the whole clutch?

Does it sound like I can just get away with a new pulley since it's just noisy and working fine?

Thanks.

Engine Tech / A/C Pulley Noise
On the way home from work today I started getting a knocking/rattling sound consistent with RPMs. I take the belt off and start the car, no noise. I spin the A/C pulley and it's making noise as I spin it by hand. The noise is worse when the compressor isn't engaged and my A/C still works great.

Is there a bearing that I can replace or the pulley itself? I'm not too experienced with A/C stuff. I want to keep this as cheap a replacement as possible. Lol

Thanks!

Wow, just found this thread. What an awesome car, extremely clean and nice setup. Love your father's Terminator too.

Suspension/Steering / Price To Re-Pack Front Bearings

They make good road trip cars ;).

I averaged 28mpg when i did my t-5 swap (compareable .68 od vs apd's .67 od) over 1300 miles when i ran it out to montana. i had over 500lbs of tools and all our luggage with me when we went too. got pulled over a few times in idaho and searched for drugs cause my bumper was draggin.

I don't think I'll make it through PA without getting pulled over 5 times with a spray painted T-Bird with NY plates. Lol

Mavis said there was a little play on both sides, checked everything, retightened and it's good now. Should at least get me through to when I can do them with my friend. Only cost $32. Everyone have a good and safe holiday!!

Thanks for the info guys. It sucks being in New York when even simple automotive work is expensive. I usually do all top end, oil changes and non lifting work on my own and everything else I do with my friend who is a mechanic and has the area to lift the car. I'll stop by Mavis today and see what they quote me, if its under $150 I'll go for it, otherwise I'll lose this nice holiday weekend and probably do it next week or so with my friend.

Id let ya bring it over one afternoon and help you do it for free, of course you'd buy parts and drive 2200miles.

That would be a cool road trip, but not really worth it for bearings. Lol

Suspension/Steering / Price To Re-Pack Front Bearings
I ordered new ball joints and other front end parts to do at some point over the summer but everything is still good on the car to last me until then. The only thing I'm worried about is the front wheel bearings. They are grinding on sweeping highway turns and I want to have them done now so I can continue to enjoy the car.

I don't have the time or the space to do any work involving lifting the car. What do you think I can expect to pay to have the wheel bearings done at a Mavis or Meineke type place? What's a fair price to pay for labor? I already have new bearings if they need to be replaced instead of just being re-packed.

Thanks!
