User Rides / Got new shoes. Second hand wheels, anyway.
But they are new to me. I found a set of 16" CenterLines with tires for 200 bucks. The fronts are 225/50R16 and the rears are 245/45R16. I'm not sure of the rim width. I find that out when I get new rubbers. They make the Cat sit soo much better. What do you guys think?

Sorry about the py pics. I couldn't take a decent picture to save my life. lol

Engine Tech / Exhaust questions
So here's what finally happened:

After a month of this guys song and dance, I finally get my headers; which he delivers to my work this past Friday evening. Were they the ceramic MAC shorties he agreed to upgrade my order? No. Were they even MAC shorties? No. They are some no name shorties that he probably got off ebay. SCREW IT. I took my headers and will never deal with that place ever again.

I installed the headers, and factory hpipe. But, things don't quite line up underneath. The hpipe rubs the tranny pan, we are talking direct contact. The column shifter doesn't like the new setup either. I had to reroute the linkages. I need s put on the flowmasters so they can bolt up to the hpipe.

My solution, My guy is going to reshape the hpipe to fit without tranny contact. And he will put s on the flowmasters so the can bolt up to the hpipe. I ordered a B&M Hammer shifter with the AOD kit.

When I get my car back from the shop, I'll post pics. Until then, enjoy this cam/phone video of my Cougar running headers and hpipe, with no lers.

My mom came over to hear it. Her words exactly, "She sounds righteous." I wish I didn't have to reinstall the lers.

Engine Tech / Exhaust questions
I ended up going to Super Shops in El Cajon and buying a set of MAC shorties for $159 plus tax, which I paid in full. The Manager kept the shop open late for me, which was real cool. This place is a good 20 miles from my office, and 40 miles from my house. They were supposed to arrive last Friday, May 8th. Well, Friday has come and gone. On Monday, I called them and got the run-around from some guy; the manager not being available.

I've called them each day this week. Strangely, no one knows anything, or they simply don't pick up the phone. I felt like they were avoiding me. Today, I used my company cell phone and got the manager on the horn. He finally gives me the skinny: The headers are on backorder. GREAT! However, he is upgrading me to ceramic coated MACs for the inconvenience.

Bottom line, I'm getting ceramic coated MAC shorties for $175.59. Delivery date unknown.

Engine Tech / Alright, I'm stumped. (Solved!)
The first two things I always do when I buy a non-op car are replace the harmonic balancer and wire the plugs with the proper firing order.

You might want to clean the throttlebody because the butterfly usually gets all gummed up. Just take a rag soaked in gasoline, wrap it around a screwdriver and scrub away. Be careful not to scratch anything, though.

Imma go with the stock mustang shorties. I should have everything done by this weekend.

Engine Tech / Exhaust questions
I have been putting off getting the exhaust done because of all the smog requirements we have in California. I had Deltaflow 40's and the rear pipes redone so I could pass smog a few months ago. Recently I came up on a catted h-pipe from a totaled fox. And, when I install it I want to get headers as well.

So, here are my questions.
-The h-pipe has two hangers, but my car only has provisions for one. Is this going to be a problem.
-The h-pipe has an air tube that doesn't line up with my existing air tube. What is the best way to remedy that issue?
-I have an opportunity to get used BBK equal length shorties $150. Are there going to be any fitment issues? Otherwise, I can get stock Mustang shorties for $50.
-Who in their right mind designed the 2 to 1 to 2 exhaust profile on my car? Is that stock?

The current exhaust and AOD:

**Side note for BEARMAX** You asked in my first post about the rollback in my driveway. I didn't have a clue as to what you meant. Here in California we call them flatbeds. lol I run a tow company. And my neighbors love it when all the guys hang out at my house on the weekend and block the street with four trucks.

User Rides / My $200 '88 Cougar..she's so purty!
Sorry for hijacking this thread. I did not know that people willingly spend money to destroy their cars in that fashion. Further, I do not want to know how you found the websites hosting such blasphemous pics. [/hijack]

Nice buy!

Would you mind telling me what you meant by:
All he wanted was to donk her and make her into a lowrider.
I understand the lowrider part. But, WTF do you mean donk?

User Rides / Rescued from imminent death. **Caution: Abused Cougar** (Dial-up warning)
Technically, he should have had the car smogged before he sold it to me. But, I knew it wouldn't pass, he knew it wouldn't pass, and for $360 I couldn't complain too much. Besides, His parents are buying him a new SUV for his 22nd birthday. So yeah, they couldn't register it and decided to buy little Billy a new ride. I, on the other hand, have a guy that will do a "pre-sniff" for me and let me know what I need to do. Which shouldn't be anything because I'm getting the exhaust done next Saturday.
For the time being, I'm just getting Delta Flow Series 40 and tail pipes. I'll hold off on the headers, x-pipe, and cats until I get the engine work done. I'm trying to find the right combo of heads and cam and intake manifold. Obviously 75mm TB and MAF and CAI. Right now it's speed density, so I'll have to do some wiring.
As far as the body is concerned, I have no shame. I can drive it around looking beat up for a while as long I redo the ghetto purple/bubbled/poorly cut tint job.
I'll keep you guys up to date with progress reports.

And thanks for the warm welcome!

First off, I'm new to the site and this is the first 5.0 I've owned. I'm 29 years old and have been busting my knuckles under the hood since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. I broke my teeth on 1963 Buick Wildcat. Hopefully, I'll fit in to the community.

I was browsing craigslist looking for a five hundred dollar daily driver when I saw this pathetic Cougar. For some reason, unbeknown to me, I kept coming back to the ad. After meeting the kid, and seeing the car, I knew it was my duty to the Car Gods to rescue her.

Relax, pics are soon to follow. The kid told me how his grandma bought her in '88, and he got "it" as a present TWO years ago. This kid has royally thrashed this machine in that short time. I gave him $360 and I hope he is NEVER allowed to touch another car so long as he lives!

The car had no front windows on either side. Apparently, he broke one while trying to install new speakers with the window down and fastened a screw into the glass. The other side was busted out. It was cheaper to replace both doors as the sum of all things to be repaired exceeded the price for two doors from the boneyard.

Oh, yeah... The interior is all jacked up

But, at least the carpet matches the drapes!

And the driver side ler has NO tailpipe.

What I have done so far:
New rotors and pads. The old ones were warped and down to metal.
New drums and shoes. Same as the front.
New master cylinder, as the old one had no pressure to the rear.
New shocks all around.
New cap, rotor and plugs. Also to find out, the timing was 180 out, and the firing order was way out to lunch. I'm amazed she even ran.
New harmonic balancer. The old one was about to fly off into the radiator.
Tranny filter and fluid change.
New valve cover gaskets. The old ones were spraying oil like a lawn sprinkler.
3 oil changes in the first month. He never changed the filter. He only had 2 1/2 quarts in the block and only added one quart of oil each week to keep it from leaking.
New doors. The old ones had busted glass, no mirrors, bent linkages, bad window motors, bad door lock actuators, and framing hammer sized/shaped dents.
New lamps for the instrument cluster. 10 of the 26 were burnt out. (I think there are 26)
Optima battery.
Removed, cleaned and rebuilt throttle body. It had close to and 1/8" of build up.
I rewired almost the entire car so that everything works now. He fancied himself an auto electrician.
New heater core.
All new vacuum lines.
Removed A/C tubing. The pump is soon to follow, once I find a P/S pump relocation bracket.

What do you guys think? Was it worth the $360 for the car, and $600 in parts? What should my next move be?

Lounge / Kind of a fun time killer....
That was a fun game. Haystack, tell your guy at work that anyone stubborn enough to own a Ford is stubborn enough to beat a silly lil game.
