Lounge / The Value of These Cars?
Don;t worry its not another, how much do you think my car is worth thread :)

I was just wondering if these cars are getting to the point where they are becoming historic, rare, desired, or classic (what ever you want to call it) in that they can command increasingly higher prices.  I know there are a select few who prise these cars, but is the market getting to the point where a mint condition 88 Thunderbird is worth $5000?

The reason I ask is; locally there is an 88 T-bird and an 83 Cougar for sale for around $5000 each.  They are both in decent shape but have high miles and are no where near "show cars" exhibiting normal wear and tear for something 20 years old.  However, I thought the rarity of these cars (at least around here) is commanding prices double the blue book price.

Lounge / East bound and down: Montreal that is...
A good friend of mine has moved from the great white north, into French territory, and I have got a few days off in February to go visit him.

As I have never been anywhere east of Thunder Bay, ON, I just wanted to ask you all who live in Montreal or who have visited there a few questions.
  • What tourist sights do you recommend in the city?
  • We plan on skiing two days at Mount Tremblant, are there any interesting sights in that region I should go see
  • Will I be ok, only knowing two words in French
  • Is it hard to get used to driving on the left hand side of the road :)

Just kidding on the last one, although I think Montreal will be a little different to drive in than rural Manitoba, although the 32 hours drive should ease me into that city driving mood.

Oh! One more thing, is liqueur cheaper in Quebec, Ontario, or Manitoba.  Just to compare here a "two four" is $35, and a "two six" of Canadian 83 is about $22

Thanks for any advise or recommendations.

Audio & Other Aftermarket Electronics / Hi Tech Audio Stuff Does Not Like Winter
I'll start this off by saying I should have known better, having lived here all my life.

But today I went out to the car to start it, and of course I left my satellite radio and stereo on over night. After I started the car and began chiseling the 1/4" of frost off the windshield, I noticed both the LCD display on the Sirius Radio and stereo had froze.  I left both in the house all day to "thaw" and they still won't work.

Is this common to LCD type displays?  Anything I can do, short of going back to Canadian Tire and claiming the radio was defective?  Does cold really fry this hi tech stuff.

Thanks, I know very little about LCD and stereo stuff.

Lounge / Synthetic Oil
Is it as big a scam as I think it is:nkhk:

Ok seriously, I know its not a scam, but I was wondering if anyone has seen or experianced any real benefits to using it, which outweight the hefty price tag.

The reason this comes to mind was the number of people using synthetic in the "what weight oil do you run" thread.

I have always used dino oil, simply because synthetic is so expensive and still has to be changed just as often.  I change my oil every two months, and I priced out switching to synthetic and it roughly doubles my oil change cost: from ~$10 to $20.

Two out of my three vehicals have over 300,000km all on 5W30 or 0W30 shell dino oil, and my diesel work truck has 750,000, on 15W40 dino all with no engine work done.  So, with regular oil performing this well, where does synthetic come into play for the average driver?

I'm not trying to start a fight or arguement, I'm just curious because in "my world" no one uses synthetic and online so many people do.

Lounge / Oil Price Alert!
To all Canadians that is,

Canadian Tire has Quaker State 5W20, 5W30 winter oil,  gallon jugs (4.4L), on sale for $11.99 including a free QS oil filter.

That's cheeper than messing with the 22L pails.  I bought 10 gallons today, which should last the winter.

Audio & Other Aftermarket Electronics / satellite Radio
I'm just wondering if anyone has that SIRUS satellite radio in their cars.  The prices have come down so much, I was thinking of getting it.

The only kind of music I listen to is Country but I also like news and talk radio.

What is satellite radio like?  Does it work when its raining or snowing, or does it cut out like satellite TV?  Would I be better off to invest in a cd player and spend the time making Cd's for it.  This is kinda tuff for me because I only have dial up at 33.3K, so downloading songs takes a while.

Thanks for any advice / experience you car to share.

Lounge / Outrageous Printer Ink Prices
I recently got this lexmark printer/scanner/copiers/fax machine for about $110, thinking it was a good deal.  And I will admit the machine works does all those functions well.  It even prints decent quality photos.

That is where the customer satisfaction ends.  Today I went to Wal-Mart to purchase new ink Cartridges for it, both black and color, and was horrified by the price.  About $100 for a kit containing both.

So my question is twofold:

1.  Do those "knock off brand" Cartridges work decently?
2.  Can lexmark Black 16 and Color 26 Cartridges be refilled.  Does it actually work when you try those do it yourself refill kits?

Thanks

Lounge / So how are your roads?
Inspired by Outlawz24's avaiator (which now seems more Canadian then the Maple leaf):

What are the roads like in your area?  The reason I ask is that after a winter of constant freezing and thawing our roads are in the worst condition ever seen in the history of automobile travel in Manitoba.  That is not an exaduration.

Most highways are riddled with frost heaves every 100 feet approx 1"-3" tall.  It is getting so bad the highways department has reduced speed limits to 45mph.  Somehow the freak weather this winter has caused this to happen everywhere.  I drove to lake louise alberta last week and just about had the fillings rattled out of my teeth.
I guess the suspension repair places are gonna make a good buck this spring.

Lounge / eBay Question
I've just recently started selling on eBay, trying to get rid of the pile of misc. car parts in my shop.  I'm really amazed at how well it works, and what people are willing to buy.

My question is I recently bought a a new set of A/C hoses (value ~$50).  Before the auction ended I contacted the buyer and conviced him to ship to Canada and he quoted me a shipping price.

After the auction ends I hear nothing from him for 10 days.  He does not send an invoice or respond to my numerous e-mails.  So I think he changed his mind about the sale, reported it to eBay and left him negative feedback.  Two days after that I finally get an invoice, I replyed and told him I cound not wait 10 days for him to contact me had had bought the hoses elseware. After a few exchanges told him where to shove the hoses.

So my question is (I could not find an answer in the Ebay literature) how long should you wait for an invoice after sale?  Keep in mind in this case he was not using the eBay checkout feature as I did not have a firm shipping price.

Lounge / Remote Car Starters
Can anyone recomend one brand over another?

It would appear that my BullDog remote starter, bought at walmart about five yeas ago, has a busted relay or two.  They are internal and cannot be replaced.

I have been dissapointed with BullDog since I installed the unit and was hopeing there were better brands on the market.

I am looking for just a basic remote starter.  No remote door locks or security system.  I need one with the :cold start feature:  ie:  It will start the engine every two hours or when ever it get below a certain temp.  Is their such a thing that will run the car continously (as in all  night long) for cold weather.  Often I am worried about leaving the car running with the keys in side.

Thanks for any advice.

General Computer Forum / Problem Viewing this board
I seems that when ever a start up my computer (from being shut off, not hibernating) and access this page I get several popup ads for something called WinFix.  These ads are made to look like the "program" is scanning my pc and finding errors.

Naturally I assumed that this was a virus or something bad and just closed the popups.  But they keep comming back.

I installed the latest version of ad-aware and ran it but the popups are back.  Also, norton finds no viruses.

My question is,  what anti-spyware program should I look into getting?  Does anyone alse have this problem?

Lounge / Never seen a live moose?
In all may days of hunting, fishing, and canoeing in the Canadian Shield I have never seen a moose.  Well technically....I've never seen a LIVE moose, some may recall I hit one with a truck severl years back.

So you can imagine my surprise a few days ago when I drive into town (Winnipeg) and saw one in the grocery store parking lot.

It seems that it took 12 cop cars to contain the thing untill it was shot.

In other news, full size male black bear was also spotted in Northern Winnipeg the same morning.

Lounge / Shipping tickets into Canada from US
I know there are a lot of ebayers around here and maby someone can help:

I want to purchase some concert tickets, for a concert in the US, from a seller in the US.  When I have them shipped to Canada via USPS, will I have to pay duty on the tickets?

If so, where can I find out how much?

Thanks in advance to any Canadian ebayers who have tryed this.
