Never seen a live moose?

In all may days of hunting, fishing, and canoeing in the Canadian Shield I have never seen a moose.  Well technically....I've never seen a LIVE moose, some may recall I hit one with a truck severl years back.

So you can imagine my surprise a few days ago when I drive into town (Winnipeg) and saw one in the grocery store parking lot.

It seems that it took 12 cop cars to contain the thing untill it was shot.

In other news, full size male black bear was also spotted in Northern Winnipeg the same morning.

Many years ago, my family and I were driving home to Nova Scotia from Calgary. Just outside Thunder Bay we came around a corner and there was an enormous bull moose standing in the roadway. Luckily we stopped in time, but it's an event I'll never forget. My father was sleeping in the passenger seat and my mother was driving. When she saw the moose she yelled, and my father started scrambling for the wheel - he thought he fell asleep while driving! It was scary but funny.

That was 25 years ago...

So on the subject of wildlife spotting, ever seen a bear? About five years ago i was deer hunting and had spread some apples on one end of a large field. I took my place in my blind on the other end of the field and out came a bear. I cranked my rifle scope up to 9X power and watched that sunuvabitch eat my whole 10 pounds of apples. The bear didn't even look at me (though that's a good thing - if he had, and made an aggressive gesture or even snorted, a .30-06 bullet would've gone up his nose). After he went back into the woods I realized he did so between the truck and myself. Let me tell you it was a very careful stroll back to that truck!

No Newfoundlands around there, hey? If there were, they'd have that thing killed, panched, quartered, in the back of someone's truck and out of there before the cops showed up. :) J/K

I remember one trip in paticular when I was driving home from St. John's - 4 hour drive. I stopped counting after seeing 12 moose either on or by the side of the road. I didn't dare look at them in the mirror for fear that another was on the road ahead.

OMG! either you guys are joking or i've spent way too much of my life in the sticks (... well I know I have) used to see at least one moose usually two on my way to school on the bus from grade 6 on and the odd black bear. used to have to chase bears away from the dumpsters with the car to toss out our trash. Also we used to get coyotes, bears, and even a lone wolf once in our compost pile in the backyard, couldnt imagine it any other way... then again the other night I saw a fox wandering around the sprawl*mart parking lot so that kind of gives you an idea of the type of place I live

Bears?  In fact I've seen over a dozen this year alone.  This area is very highly bear populated.  You may have heard about a man killed in his own back yard while picking plums, in Selkirk Manitoba.

The way I see it: there are two types of bears (in Manitoba):  The ones in highly populated areas that will attack humans because they are no longer afraid.  And the wilderness bears that are affraid of humans.

For example,  this summer while fishing far from any roads, we enountered a bear entering our campsite.  One blast on a wistle (sp?) and he ran for his life.  On the other hand, their was a bear in my back yard last week which I could not scare off, for the life of me.  Even with a few decoy shots from my .270.  I would have tryed the shot gun (louder) but had no ammo.  He wasn;t doing anydamage or threating anyone so I let him be.  Besides I didn;t want to drag a carcus that weights 900lbs out of smell range.

Bears are kinda rare here in NS - I've only ever seen three - the one mentioned above, and two while driving past a commercial blueberry field. Moose are much more rare in the mainland but fairly common on Cape Breton island. Other wildlife (deer, coyotes, foxes, rapuppiess, porcupines, etc) are quite common, even in the suburban area I live in. Bald eagles are a dime a dozen here, and rabbits are almost a plague this year - every time I go out on the four wheeler I count dozens of rabbits and have even run over a few (gonna be a good bunny season :D) I actually nailed a coyote on the main street about 15 years ago while driving my '66 Galaxie at about 2:00 AM. By driving I mean racing, and by racing I mean 120+ MPH (the speedo was pegged). I was afraid to get out and look at the car, but that '66 Galaxie's 500-pound bumper didn't have a scratch. The coyote, on the other hand, fared much, much worse.

We've got plenty of wildlife here in Nova Scotia, but not much diversity. Certainly nothing like Alberta...

And gooses are geese. The english language is a funny thing.

Actually, if you're talking about two different types of moose it's "mooses", I think - kinda like the fish/fishes thing. You've got a school of fish, or a few different fishes.
