AC Parts April 22, 2006, 02:27:44 PM After swapping in the mustang HO into my 85 bird, which AC parts do I need to buy. I didn't bring any ac parts along from the 87 cougar donor as I was planning on buying new but I am not sure which to buy. Do I buy the mustang ac lines/compressor or do I buy cougar lines/compressor?? I was planning on reusing my original evaporator and condensor. I had a replacement compressor on my 85 bird that I was going to use but it is too long to fit on the mustang. It interferes with the valve cover. Thanks for your help, Jason Quote Selected
AC Parts Reply #1 – April 23, 2006, 06:38:06 PM Is it a SEFI HO or a CFI HO? If it's a SEFI HO I *think* you have to use the A/C parts from a 86-88 Tbird/Cougar. I believe that the Mustang parts are a bit different and won't fit. I could be wrong though. Quote Selected

AC Parts Reply #5 – April 26, 2006, 11:19:08 PM I dropped in the 92 mustang engine in it's entirety. I used the 87 cougar for misc parts and the wiring and fuel injection harness. I should have grabbed the ac stuff for a test fit. Now I am looking at ordering parts and not knowing for sure what will fit. I am concerned about the fittings. Some driers hook up to the evaporator with those ford comprssion sping lock deals and some just screw on. I tried to do a comparison with some junk yard cars but there were no v8 cars in either yard I went to. I will try to look at pictures as well. I think I can use the mustang line from the compressor to the condensor, the t-bird line from the condensor to the evaporator. I am not sure about the drier line yet. I am disapointed about not being able to use my compressor from my old engine as it was pretty new and barely used. I am afraid of using the compressor that came with the mustang engine as it currently has no oil in it and has been open to air for a long time. Has anyone here rebuilt an ac compressor? I saw that you could get the kits for like $40.00. Dogcharmer, that is a very informative site. thanks. Quote Selected
AC Parts Reply #6 – April 27, 2006, 11:51:40 AM The compressor on your '85 is an FS6. The compressor that came with the '92 HO motor is a 6P148A. They are very similar. The main difference is the displacement. The FS6 is larger. Given that they have the same piston bore diameter, the larger displacement is caused by a longer stroke. Since 5.0 Mustangs were never offered with an FS6 this increased length (from the longer stroke) is why the FS6 won't fit on your '92 HO motor. You can either swap your original accessory brackets in and use your FS6 + use hoses for a '92 Mustang w/5.0 (except for the liquid line*). ...or you can buy a 6P148A and use hoses for a '92 Mustang w/5.0 (except for the liquid line*). I wouldn't try to rebuild the compressor. Too easy to mess up and cost you far more in the long run. Just buy a quality rebuilt one (from ackits.com).*The evaporator on the '92 Mustang has a spring-lock fitting, the evaporator on your car has none. Order the liquid line for the chassis.
