460 rebuild...

Hi guys... its been a long time... :D
And no, I'm not dead... yet...

Now i got my 460 (w/ all accessories and manifold) and a C6 from a Lincoln Continental 1978 that was rear-ended 2 months ago. I also received the "How to rebuild Ford V8 Engine" book by Tom Monroe I ordered last week.
I plan a complete tear off and rebuild. the engine has 177,000km.

What would you suggest for good performance with a low budget? (1000-1500$)
For sure a complete Rebuild kit with forged pistons (Gaskets, Oil Pump, Rings, Pistons, Freeze Plugs) from summit.

What could be done while at it? Some question persist.
Home made porting?
CAM?
Which headers would work?
Torque converter?
Where can I find Motor mounts for 390 -> 460 swap?

Here's the pics taken today after the delivery.
Any input are welcome...
Dont forget this is for my 1967 Thunderbird.. ;)

, checked out the car domain.  That'll be a pretty nice ride when you are done with it.  I like how much progress you've made already.  Btw what subs are those you are putting in it?

For now it will be only my 2x no-name 10" 200w (100wRMS). I have only finished 1 of the 2 sub box. I ran out of glue for the carpet so I didnt finished the 2nd one since... :P

Unfortunately I cannot work anymore with paint or bondo or any smelly product until i can open the garage door on hotter days or my neighbours on this floor, where the garage is, wont appreciate me a lot... I live in an appartement building and I was warned once about it by the landlord before winter...

As for a convertor which tranny are you using?  C4 I assume?  The stall speed will depend a lot on your head/cam/intake combo and what that combo's powerband is.  Keep in mind this is a heavy car.  Also consider where you will be using this car the most street? strip? weekend cruiser? daily driver?

ditch the heads and pick up a set of 68-70's, c8ve's or dove-c's. they will get your compression up. look in the PAW catalog for an engine kit if your on a tight budget. what do you plan on using the car for? here's my old setup, went 12's at 109 in the 1/4 in a full weight 85 tbird
70 460, .030
dove-c heads, home ported by me
weiand stealth intake w/ 750 holley vac sec
comp cams 280 magnum
harland sharp 1.73 rockers
1 5/8" swap headers
c-6 w/ 3500 converter
3.55 gear
255-50-16 bfg drag rads

nice mild combo that will run strong on the street with a real flat torque curve(like idle to 5500 :) )

Thanks for your reply.... BTW, This is a C6...

I plan to use on street only... No Drag race... And my head are D3VE-A2A. I've read that those are great if i plan to change for flat-head pistons.

I checked those link about the cams, but that lift, duration and lobe thing are still chinese to me...

My goal is a powerfull (360-400hp) custom street car...  Not a Drag racer.  I plan to add a Carputer, GPS, touch screen and things like that... so i dont want it to shake like hell... My tbird total weight with the original 390 was 4200lb and i think my carb is a 600cfm 4-barrel. how much HP max should I expect from it?

I found motor mount and headers here for FE -> 385 Serie :

What do you think?

For what it's worth...I have an older issue of Car Craft where they have a short little blurb about a 460 they built. Everything on it was stock except for the cam, intake, carb, and headers, and they made 400-some hp, they don't give the specs on the cam though.

If you don't understand cam specs (and I can understand where you're coming from), look in a summit catalog, or maybe you can find something online that lists what kinda specs you want in a mild street cam. I have a Comp Cams catalog that lists all their cams by category and just what you should use them for, how they idle, etc.

Oh yeah, isn't a 600 CFM carb kinda small for a 460? I mean, that's what came on the 302 in the '85 Mustang GT's from the factory...

he needs at LEAST a 780 cfm carb. my 429 picked up 3 tenths with a 850cfm carb over the 780.
