Opinions on Taurus's...

Or Taurus i's. I'm just looking for some info/opinions on the ford taurus, name the '98 model with the 24v dohc v6 engine. I've been searching around but what info i've found has been sketchy at best. I can't seem to find exact specs (i.e.: horsepower, tourque rating) and general reliability data. So I figured i'd ask here to see what folks think, or thought about the car in general. Thanks in advance!

i have had a 98  a 2001  and am driving a 2002

my dad has had a 91 a 96 and a 2001

No real problems with any of them.  I  have broken end links (known problem) replaced under warranty with better grade ones.  Only other problems were dpfe sensor (for egr function).  These only happened to a couple of them.  My cars take a pounding in  city driving and stand up ok.  I have never kept one past 100K miles.  Never did anything to them except routine maintenance and even that just oil atf and coolant changes.  Brakes last about 70K, and the only other service was the repairs mentioned above.  They are comfy and have a good size trunk which i need .

The ford taurus is a good, cheap, reliable, no frills means of transportation (unless it's the SHO, then it's completely opposite).

We have a 96 with the dohc duratec, its got 180k miles on it and runs like new.  Tranny is another story though.

I would buy another, but never the 3.0 vulcan engine.  But even when I worked at autozone no one ever got engine parts for them, just chassis stuff.

Cool, kinda helps for the most part. And Jeremy, I already looked there, the problem lies in the fact that I don't believe the engine matches up with the trim. This specific car currently has 117,700 miles and a price tag of a $1000 (person's trying to get enough to pay it off).

The Duratec motor in the Taurus is a decent little motor.  My father-in-law has an 04 he drives the hell out of.

Is that the 24v DOHC one?

Yes, the 24v DOHC is the duratech, it appeared in 1996.  The OHV 12v is the vulcan, it has been in the taurus since it was introduced in like 1985 or 86.  They are both 3.0 liter engines.  The contour got the same duratech but it was only a 2.5 and it had a different intake.

Them 24v DOHC are pretty good engines. We have a '98 in my auto-tech class and the trans is messed up so when you move it the revs go up to about 2 grand and all of a sudden the trans works and the tires break loose.lol I dont think its a common prob, so dont worry.

i have owned a 95 2000 and my 2001 that i drive everyday my dad had had...85 89 92 95 98 2003 im sure i may have missed one or two....the only bad things about them is engine will over power the tranny but i also heard that after the 98 they fixed that so i dont know my 2001 runs perfect and i beat the hell out of it. but they are right you want a cheap car that can get to 200k miles easly this is your car.

My first car was a taurus... I named her susan (92)... shiznit hit a tree.  Then my next car was a taurus.  Blew up the tranny and motor... (94)  All in all, good cars.  My dad bought a 86 taurus MT5 brand new, and it lived to be 400,000.  My uncle owns 2 gen 3's and 2 gen 2s and a gen 3 SHO.  Very cool cars...  While were talking about the 24v, is that the same motor in the 2005 mazda 6's?  I think it is.
