Starting Bs.. November 24, 2004, 12:33:40 PM On the girlfriend's '84 3.8, I've changed the starter, solenoid & battery, still no turning over. All you hear is a lovely whirring sound, and I can't tell if the starter is even spinning or not. I'm about at my wit's end with this thing... Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated. Re: Starting Bs.. Reply #1 – November 24, 2004, 05:32:48 PM Is this the same problem you had before you replaced any parts? It sounds like the starter is running but not engaging the flywheel ring gear.Under the dome shaped cover on top of the starter are contact points that should be closed when the starter is off. When voltage is first applied to the starter a high current goes through these contacts and the top field coil in the starter. This generates a strong magnet to pull down on the engaging lever (also under the dome cover) which shoves the drive gear into the flywheel ring gear.If the contact points are not making the motor will run without engaging. However all the stuff on top of the motor should should have come with the new motor. Quote Selected

Reply #2 – November 25, 2004, 01:29:29 PM take the starter off and get a light under there. sounds like your flywheel is stripped out.are these ring gears replaceable? i never really noticed on my car or not.anyone?actually,, before you go thru that trouble,, rotate the crank with a socket/extention/breaker bar so as to reposition the flywheel. try to start again,, if it turns over then you hear some wierd noise that sounds bad,, your flywheel is shot. been there, done thatgot the tshirt.
