Strange 3.8L engine sound under load at low rpm...

Hello again!
I was cruising back from work yesterday and I've noticed a strange sound while accelerating slowly from the lights. When engine is running on low rpm and it shifts up to 2nd gear and than to 3rd gear at about 25mph there is a strange sound comming from the right side of the engine. It sound like a beetle in the grass or something like this it's like hissing or squeking sound in the beetle sound - I dunno how to call it. I'm wondering what the problem is? Think alt bearings need attention but would they make a sound like this? I can't hear this sound while accelerating faster or while revving it up without load. I also noticed that while it's shifting to 3rd gear at low rpm I can feel an engine vibration and this strange sound exacerbates for a while. Do you think it may be exhaust system or something? Maybe bad pre-cats?
Please help!
Mariusz...

Sounds like your tranny slipping to me maybe?  It does it when shifting? A lot of times its hard to diagnose sounds while driving because it throws off where it seems like the noise is coming from.

It does it with gears fully engaged, don't think it's the tranny problem. It doesn't seem to slip.
Sometimes after startup on a warm engine it runs a little rough for a few senconds and I can hear that sound than too.

I removed the thermactor pump and plugged the EGR with custom made aluminium spacer a few weeks ago. It was all OK. Now it got much colder outside. Dunno if it all might cause shuddering under load at low rpm?

Any time I let the gas pedal off the sound is gone. Than if I slightly depress it car starts to accelerate and I can hear that sound.

does it do it in reverse?  Almost sounds like it could be a u-joint.  I went through this a few years back.  It sounded almost like a wear pad sensor on a brake, but if I put the car in nuetral while coasting at a speed I would hear the sound in at drive, it would go away.

After almost a week of searching for the source of that strange sound I had to take my T-bird for a longer highway trip. After an hour of driving at around 80mph I was back in the city and guess what? I can't hear that sound anymore! And there's no shuddering under load even on cold engine. Think it may be a problem of city driving most of the time that caused some kind of spark plugs fouling (the spark plugs may be really old). I guess it was just a strange exhaust sound!
BTW. What are the best spark plugs for 3.8 CFI engine? Motorcraft, Champion, NGK?
