Biggest cam with SO

I'm posting this questions for a friend, being as I don't mess with the SO engines.  He has an SO engine from a late 80's grand marquis, it's a roller block so no earlier than '87.  I was under the impression that the stock HO cam would work, I guess I was wrong because he got a cam out of an '86 HO and the valveshiznit the pistons.  He has stock heads for now.

Also, I'm tryin to explain to him that a 650 double pumper is way too much for an internally stock SO engine(w/headers).  Anybody have carb'ed combos to use as examples?

Thanks,
Don

the valves shouldnt have hit the pistons...because in 86, the mustang had E6SE heads, flat top pistons, and the 86 HO cam...the SO's 86+ go E6SE's, flat tops, and the non-HO cam
It's Gumby's fault.

the E7 heads with an HO cam should clear as well.

Whats already been said about the cams....

As far as a carb with the SO heads, a 550-600 cfm vac secondary would be plenty( the old 289 HI-POs only used a 470)... A 650 DP would OK he had aftermarket heads, cam ,etc...

I would agree with that, but he's running stock SO heads and doesn't know how to tune a carb for his life.  He almost put a 50oz/in balancer on it too....lol, good way to destroy a 28.2oz/in crank.  He says it hits, I haven't been to his place to check it out yet, so who really knows.  Maybe he left the plugs in and it's building compression...he's a little guy so he wouldn't be able to turn it over...lol.  Coming from him, that wouldn't really suprise me too much.
