Rim - A circular metal structure around which a wheel tire is fitted.

Wheel - A solid disk or a rigid circular ring connected by spokes to a hub, designed to turn around an axle passed through the center.

Tire - A covering for a wheel, usually made of rubber reinforced with cords of nylon, fiberglass, or other material and filled with compressed air. - A hoop of metal or rubber fitted around a wheel.

Seems to be "rim" and "wheel" are interchangable.

Kinda what I was thinking too... Tire + Rim ='s Wheel :dunno:!

Just a BIG pet peeve. Semantics really, but just VERY annoying.

A rim is part of a wheel...the "hoop" or ring around the outside.  It is joined to the hub via spokes or a solid disk, etc.

A wheel is the whole lot (rim, spokes, hub)

A tire is the rubber part goes around a wheel.

You buy "WHEELS and TIRES"......

Ah! now I got it! Rim - The circular outer part of a wheel, furthest from the axle. I must say though, I alway thought of it as Nirvanagod. Tire + Rim = Wheel.

EDIT: hehe! I just did a search for rim on Canadian tire's web site, not that Canadian Tire is an athority on the english language, and found this.

Apparently my replies have been a little on the blunt side :p

Anyway,

Well, alot of the sites probably pander to the prevailing slang ....since that's all folks hear anymore when someone discusses wheels and such....

Mine argument stems from my time with bicycles and such....where you deal with components more often than an integral unit.  It just carries over for me...and the "rims" thing didn't come into play until recently.....ed MTV....why can't they just play videos anymore?

Also.....did they invent the "wheel" or the "rim"? ;)
