GOD I'm an IDIOT!

So here's how it is...I was removing those pesky lifters.  They would only come partway out of their bores, in fact they all pretty much caught at the same point.  Still I figured there wasn't anything really serious they could be catching on so I pressed on.  They wouldn't budge.  They even bent the damm removal tool.  Eventually I decided the only logical thing to do was force them out from inside.  I opted to use my breaker bar handle and tap them out with a hammer.  First 2 went just fine.  But the third time's the charm.  I tapped..and I tapped...and I tapped some more...still getting resistance...unknown to me was that somehow the lifter had already slipped out  :tg: So guess what?  I put a GOUGE in the lifter bore  :yuck: 93q47589234750214387521347892437894u45

OOOOOO not sure, depends on how deep the gouge is,machine shop should be able to hone it.
Also your lifters are mushrommed from wear and should be removed from the underside of the bore where the cam resides, not the top side that's why your having trouble removing them.

Interesting thought.  The book says to pull them out from the top but I guess I can try pushing them down instead.  As for the gouge I consider it pretty bad, though atleast it's not down the length of the bore.  It was made by the facing edge of the bar handle so it's sort of a thin "smiling" slit.  And it made a considerable burr.

I would file it down close and then hone it. The bore is not as tight as your piston bores and should be just fine. Make sure the oil groove doesnt move into the gouge, or you could loose oil pressure.

Thank you both for your advice.  I've just bought a small brake cylinder hone that should do the job.  And I'll size up more when I get home today.  Thanks again.

I guess this is your frist time doing this but i may be wrong.
Lifters sticking can be from them being mushromed but i have got some realy messed up lifters to come out top with a little work. But if there is alot of buildup on them they can stick too.  Now Lifter bore can be honed and sleaved if needed.
If the mark is not that bad take down any high spots with round file then hone it a little bit and call it good.

What gave me away?  Yeah it's my first time doing this.  Next time I rebuild an engine it'll go alot faster and smoother.  I tend to accept the mushroom idea because both the lifters and the bores are bright and shiny with no sign of buildup.  Also the oil holes seem slightly burred so maybe that's what's catching them.  Either way I'll proceed very carefully with the remaining 12.

if u can take a pic of the bottom of one of the lifters that was relay hard to get out.
Or just compare it to one that came out u are looking nice shiny bottom but if there is a lot of wear it will have a 3d kinda look to it.

Each and every one is stuck actually.  I previously tried using a lifter removal tool on them and managed to pull each one about half way out of its bore but beyond that they wouldn't budge.  I bent the handle of the tool from pulling.  The hammer and bar tactic worked without causing damage to the first few, the 3rd one was a fluke because I didn't hear the lifter slip out onto the floor and I just kept tapping.  Actually I guess I can compare the old lifters to the new ones.

I will take some pics of wear lifters to show the parterns that they can make.

In the future, if you are replacing the lifters, just lift them with your finger as far as they will go and clamp down on them with vice-grips and YANK! Obviously dont do that if you are going to re-use the lifters.

That works but watch how many times u snap the lip of the lifter on the realy tight ones till u have nothing left to grab.
I have done this.  Then grab the lifter around the bass and tap it with small hammer to get it out works too.

If all else fails flaming wrench with 5lb slag can be used.
