How to check timing on early model 302?

My brother has a '84 F-150 with a 302 in it and it idles like  most of the time. I wanted to check the timing because I don't think it's been set or checked in the time he's owned it. However, looking at the engine I can't see how you do it. I don't see any timing pointer anywhere, or timing marks on anything. I thought they were on the damper? Although, it's down under the water pump and everything and you can barely even see it. Also which bank has the #1 cylinder on it?
