Heater core help...

Well, my heater core went off like a grenade yesterday in traffic.  According to Chilton's and Hayne's repair manuals, the engine harness has to be disconnected, the steering column has to be dropped and the entire dash has to come out...F*CK THAT!

I've done plenty of heater cores on older cars but there has got to be an easier way about doing it on these cars....if anybody has any advice on getting it done quickly, without tearing my interior out, I'd be greatful.

Thanks,
Don

Not that bad really. I just did this last weekend, took about 2 hours. Actually I thought replacing the two heater hoses at the back of the engine was alot worse than the core change. ;)

Give mechanic a case of beer=heater core done for the price of the beer. Yes he did the core before he drank the beer :giggle: .

Mine was a pain in the ass. I had all  to my autometer gauges had to come apart as well. I spent more time on the gauges then on the bloody heater core in the cougar.

Now i have 85T and its heater core is shot.  I dont know about everyone else but every time i get a ford it has a dead heater core and a cracked window.

I miss the core on my '77 T-Bird.Just pop the hood,remove 6 or 8 sheetmetal screws,disconnect 2 hoses and pull it straight out.Easily a 10 minute job unless you've done it before,then it's a 5 minute job,literally

Yeah, my dad's '84 Delta 88 is the same way...so is my G-dad's '86 Dodge W100. Engine-sided heater cores/evaporators rock. Long live engine bays where you can fit 2 people inside comfortably!  :)

At least, it didnt happened to you in the middle of winter like me....  :bs:

Heater core is a  job...
It's not that hard, but you'll need patiente if you never removed your dash before........
When I asked some garage last year, they told me around 900$ for parts and labor... (200$ core - 700$ labor & taxes)

If you never removed a dash before, start friday and you'll finish sunday...
DONT think to use the only the Haynes manual.... It suck bad for removing the core.... Trust me.... Not enough detail or pic....
Use it conjointly with the link on coolcats they gave you.

1st time i removed my dash, it took me 9 hours just to figure how to pull it enough to get the core box and the core out....
at my 5th dash removal, i was able to do a complete dash swap in less than 3 hrs

You'll have ve to unscrew the A/C bottle in engine bay to remove the core box bolt under it. Drop the steering column on the floor by unscrewing the 4 bolt under the dash, Remove the cluster, trims, Radio & Accessories, Fan and the 5 scew holding dash in place, etc..

Probably your core is still very good.... Its propable the curved pipe welds that broke on your heater core and can be reweld with Silver and flux with a torch.

For now, you can unplug completely the core from the engine and connect both  hoses temporary togheter untill you repair it....

Good luck

Yeah, i just bypassed it for now, but I'll probably take a crack at it tomorrow...I drained the A/C the other day and when I attempted to unscrew the accumulator tube at the firewall, the line started twisting so I said to hell with it for now.  I just have to come to the realization that I'll have to destroy some valuable A/C parts.

use two wrenches one to hold and one to turn and a bit of wd40 or whatever you use.  it will come apart
