It sounds as though the filter may be clogged, fluid level may be low or the valvebody could have build-up in it. I would recommend doing a trans service then see how it works. Almost sounds like it's not holding good line-pressure so it short shifts into the next gear...my car will react in a similar fashion if the fluid gets low. BTW, stay away from transmission additives...except MAYBE that K&W stuff.
My car will shift at about 5300rpm when I let it shift on it's own...when the tranny fluid is low, sometimes it'll hit 3rd at less then 4000rpm and bog...going around hard corners it usually doesn't want to downshift at all. I'm going to be getting a 4x4 trans-pan soon which holds more fluid and has a little sump in the middle to help prevent starvation. I'm probably going to make a system of baffles and trap doors to keep the fluid at the pick-up. When I do this, I'll let you guys know.
