will 255 tires fit?

I am hopeing to get the car set up for next year to compete in SM, I will rebuild the suspension and go to a new rim and tire package.

I plan on using 16x8 diamond racing wheels with a 5 in. backspacing and plan to use either one of 2 r-compound tire sizes, 245/45-16 or 255/50-16.

I would like to use the 255's to have a bigger contact patch but will they fit. I already have rubbing issues in the front with the 245/50-16 street tires I have, they rub big time on the inner finder lines lock to lock and they rub on both sides of the front sway bar, from what I can tell.

The tires are really close to the same diameter but they are wider by about .6 of an inch and was justing getting some opinions before I make a discision.

I know that 255/60's on a 15" rim with 5.5" backspacing will work(on a stock width 7.5" rear)just barely.  With the shorter sidewall, you might run into problems.  I installed a 'Stang rear and found out it was about 2.5" narrower and now I'm running 265/50R15's with plenty of clearance....I could go to 275's with no inner fender work of any kind...meanwhile 'stang owners are biting thier nails trying not crease their quarter's while rolling the fender lip.

Good Luck,
Don

I know it isn't exactly what you asked, but I've got 275/40/17's on a 17x9 rim in the back with a Mark 7 rear and I had to roll the fenders for it to fit right.
