Dying after putting in gear!

Hey all,
I've got a question, but I've got to admit, it's not for a Fox car.  It's about my '99 Explorer with a 5.0, so I'm not totally in left field.  For 2 days now, my wife says when she gets in it cold and cranks it, it dies over and over either before she can get it in gear or as soon as she does.  Today when she got home she "told" me about it in such a nice way and "nicely" asked me to check it out.  Well, I started, shut off, and re-started it probably 5 or 6 times and went up and down the driveway, and of course it would do nothing wrong for me.  Not even after 2 hours of cool-dodwn time.  What do I need to look for?  I already had a Check Engine light for a bad EGR, so I could have another fault and not know it without having somebody check it.  Would a bad EGR cause it to die out when it's cold.  It has had the EGR problem for months and caused no other problem than a little clattering now and then and an annoying light.  Can somebody point me in a possible direction so all can be well again?  I appreciate it.

You could check your vaccume hoses for cracks and to be sure they are all connected. For example I had a hose that was cracked that caused the idle to drop low enough sometimes the car would stall and when the car ran, it would trip the CE light every now and then.

You could also check the Idle Air control. It could be gummed up which will cause the car to stall sometimes on start-up and when the car is put in gear. Take it off and spray it out with carb cleaner if it is dirty on the inside.

I'm not sure about the egr valve in particular. I think if its bad, you can disconnect and plug the vaccume hose. If it runs better with the hose off and plugged, then the egr valve is bad.

Hope this may help some. I haven't really looked at Explorers but they really shouldn't be all that different in these areas.

Yes. If it sticks open, it can easily kill the engine, or at least make it run like there's 5 or 6 spark plugs unplugged.

HAHAHAHA thats funny

This might be worth the 1min it will take to try it out. Put it in gear WITHOUT stepping on the break pedel... Does it still die>? I had a car with a shorted break pedel switch once and as soon as you step on the break to put in gear it dies... replaced the switch and all was good. It was a dirty chevy though but worth a shot..
