Comments from our resident Canadians?

I just stumbled across this tonight. I wondered what those of you north of the border had to say about it. I have no frame of reference here. I don't know if this guy doing the column is credible, or a few bricks short of a load, or whatever. I post the link for perusal as it stands.. I don't endorse it, I don't denounce it, I don't know if it's true, just.. wow.. I'm confused. :wtf:

Mainly I hope this guy is just full of it.

Just another whiny Albertan still hurting because Steven Harper's desperate and downright childish attempts at taking over parliament in April have not only failed but have blown up in his face.

I hardly think, given that Canada has long ago been vindicated for not jumping blindly into the Iraq mess, and that more soldiers have died since the war supposedly ended than actually dies in the war, and that there is no way for the war to end without Bush looking even stupider, and that Iraq is now more of a threat to Americans than it ever was with Saddam running the place, that USA is in any position to criticize any nation on its foreign policy. That article is essentially one pro-war idiot responding to another pro-war idiot.

Here's yet another "whiny Albertan's" two cents. What is printed in the article is very accurate of what the average western Canada resident feels, it is sad to say but the feeling I get is that a vast majority of Western Canadians would be all for separation from the east or even annexation to the US. There is an unbelievable hatred for the east and they're government.

, canadians all up in arms! I suppose i as a stupid un edumacated 'merican I should pay more attention to what is going on up north, but truthfully, most americans just think of canada as it's hippie little brother up north that we can beat up any time they mess with our cd's with out permission. Which is bad i guess, cause the company I work for is based out of Montreal and I like that pay check every 2 weeks..

EDIT: that and you have the total population of one of our states.

I sure wish whiny Albertans would figure out the difference between the East and Ottawa! And I think the separation route would backfire, since the oil will eventually dry up. It's easy to say these things when you've got the cash in hand. The maritime provinces are not unanimously liberal. NS in particular has a tendancy to jump from left to right and back again every election. We're all getting screwed by Ottawa. Remember, the maritimes JUST got their energy deal. How long has Alberta had theirs?

No, more like ' Canadians feeling threatened. And we have our reasons.

You have no idea how often I hear this threat/sentiment from US citizens on a daily basis.

And only stupid un-edumacated Canadians would feel that way about Americans.

I think the bottom line here is, some people just enjoy picking fights. Canada vs. USA stories sell papers. Is there any truth to it? I'm sure some people feel this way, but certainly not the majority. We're not out to get the US. If our policies clash with those of the US, then they do. Some American policies clash with our own, (many, in fact), but we don't try to work the public into a panic by saying the US is trying to take down, oh, say, our health care system.

We are two completely separate nations. It's expected and accepted that we act that way. It's not a competition.

Well, I mainly wanted to know if this guy who wrote that column was a kook or a nutter or however you want to put it. The alternative, that we really are allowing or sanctioning threats to Canada at just under the diplomatic (but still on an apparently semi-official) level, is frankly revolting to me. Had no idea that posting this would touch off a few skirmishes between the Canadians on the board, though.

Yes, believe it or not, we do have problems of our own. :giggle: I didn't mean to get in a skirmish. I just hate hearing people bunch the maritimes together with Ottawa, or central Canada, for that matter (Ontario/Quebec). They may not be geographically central, but they are certainly pollitically central.

I wasn't trying to bash canada, just telling it how it see it from what impressions i get from those americans that I know and what they feel about canadian politics. the us and canada are more intertwined than most people think and us sotherners really should pay more attention to you guys and not take for granted the previously wonderfull diplomatic relations our two contries have had in the past.

honestly, most americans don't have clue one about what is going on up north, I have a few really good friends that are canadian and I work with a canadian company, I am probably more informed than the "average" american about canada and I don't feel like I am very informed at all. It is never on our news media, and if it isn't huge controversy or "terror" related most news outlets here won't cover it here in the states.

I LOVE CANADA! they gave me my hockey and decent beer.. how can i not want to know more about whats going on!
:P

Amen. That goes for both sides.

And that has everything to do with media. Flick through the cable channels in a Canadian city vs. a US city. Well over half of our programs are from US networks. I'd be surprised if CBC or CTV (our two national networks) would show up anywhere in the south. And like you said, it takes big international news to make it on US networks, and big news is usually bad news. ;)

yah, I was ticked when Lansing Comcast didn't carry CBC I grew up in the detroit area and now work there again, I liked the news and sports from CBC (Don and his crazy suits!). The cable available to me now has CBC but I can't afford it.
Though being from michigan we are a bit spoiled when it comes to canada. I assume wisconson, ND, upper NY and the like are similar.

Funny that we can get the BBC here.. (well, BBC America, anyway.. but I think they do UK newscasts) but nothing Canadian as far as I know.

Sorry Oldraven, I agree that the Maritimes should not be grouped into the same category as Ottaw/Ontario. Guess they are just guilty by association.  :toilet:

Rather funny statement, considering that most Albertans are from the east to begin with. And if a "vast majority" was in favour of separation, your whiny asses would have separated long ago. Thankfully, the REAL "vast majority" has enough sense to know that Alberta is better off in Canada than out, and before the oil Alberta was nothing but a farming community kept alive by "those s from the east", and after the oil dries up (and it will dry up) it will become that once again. 'Round about the same time they really start pumping oil off Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, I recon...

Remember "Hay West"? A few years ago when the western farmers were starving because of drought? And we easterners donated trainloads of hay to keep 'em fed? Remember Alberta begging for money in Ottawa to help feed those same farmers again a few years later when the US banned Canadian beef, even though Alberta has more money than it knows what to do with? 'Cuz I sure don't remember "Oil East". What, exactly, has Alberta ever done in Canada, other than to beg for help when it needs it, then brag when it doesn't?

Truthfully, if Alberta wants to become another Quebec and start with the "If I don't have my way I'm taking my toys and going home" attitude, so be it. Won't affect me. The Mounties will still need cop cars, so I'll still have a job. The oil we burn here comes off a boat, not from out west. No matter what happens I'm still proud to call myself Canadian, with or without you.:canada:

In fact, if you're gonna go, just go. We've already got one Quebec threatening us with divorce for decades. We don't need another.:nono:

Oh, right, now that I typed that tirade you go ahead and clarify yourself while I'm typing it. That's OK - we hate Ottawa every bit as much as you do :D

I guess I can back down on most of my rant now, but I do still stand one one thing: Regionalism sucks. Everybody thinking they're better than everyone else is tearing this country apart, and whiny westerners threatening separation every time a gay couple gets married aren't helping matters.
