SN95 REAR Cobra brakes November 18, 2016, 11:00:36 PM I have an 85 Turbocoupe with an 88 rear axle with the disc brakes, and both front and rear axles converted to Mustang 5 Lugs. (I have LMR's 13" Cobras on the front)I want to install the Cobra Rears; Part # SVE-2320CRK as found on the "Late Model Restoration" website. After spending a number of weekends searching here and on the NATO site I have come to the conclusion that with very minor modifications it will work. The description on the LMR website states that it won't work on a Foxbody, but I am assuming that it is because the Mustang Foxbodies had drum brakes and that would have to be remedied first. Can anyone fill me in on anything I may be missing or correct any assumptions I might have wrong?Ronald Libby85Original Quote Selected
SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #1 – November 19, 2016, 08:51:21 AM The rear axle housings and axle lengths are the same between the 87-88TC 8.8 and all of the 94-98 Mustangs. Pretty sure the axle housing to axle spacing on the 99-04 Mustang rear axles is similar as well. (It's been a minute since I looked at that spreadsheet)You shouldn't have any problems, as I'm assuming that you used 94-98 Mustang axles in your TC 8.8. The support bracket that is welded onto the housing is not going to work, but that is one of the minor mods that needs to be done. After we get moved to the new house, the 8.8 axle is the next project on the list for my '83, and it'll be getting Cobra rears mounted on an 87-88TC axle. I expect no problems, myself. Quote Selected
SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #2 – November 19, 2016, 11:44:48 AM Thanks for the confirmation. That's what I got from all the reading.I used spindles and axles from a 95. Really happy with the results, but had to have TC rear rotors re-drilled for 5 lug which I'd like to avoid doing again. Besides not being as pretty as the fronts. Quote Selected
SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #3 – November 19, 2016, 07:56:59 PM The support bracket? I know the caliper bracket bolts onto the housing so the only other thing I can think of is the TC anti-moan bracket. Is that what is welded to the housing? Did not know that if that is the case but I have not messed with the TC rears before. I just put a Mustang 8.8 under my car and bolted the anti-moan brackets on as the Mustang rear end did not having them being it was a drum brake setup. Quote Selected
SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #4 – November 19, 2016, 08:09:09 PM Another option is to just get the Cobra rear brake conversion kit here:http://www.tascaparts.com/brake-kits-components-rear-brake-bracket-kit-mgt-m-2300-m?origin=pla&gclid=CIq-stKRttACFdgHgQodGB0D1gAnd then get the calipers with brackets from an auto parts store like these:http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/OBHZ/18B4824A/03345.oap?year=2001&make=Ford&model=Mustang&vi=1372643&ck=Search_03345_1372643_2075&pt=03345&ppt=C0066Spend about $450 for the same kit and then have some $$$ left over for the SS brake lines you will need to buy. The anti-moan bracket is welded onto the TC rear axle. For later cars, like the Mustangs, it's bolted on. The welds are easy enough to knock off and allow later model brackets to be bolted on. You won't have any issues. Just cut off of the anti-moan (huh huh huh) brackets and bolt on the new ones.Quote from: Chuck W;458037The rear axle housings and axle lengths are the same between the 87-88TC 8.8 and all of the 94-98 Mustangs. SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #7 – November 20, 2016, 01:09:30 PM The spreadsheet with the axle/housing info is here on the forum. I just didn't have time to dig it up.Yes, I was meaning the anti-moan bracket. Gotta knock mine off when I get into prepping the 8.8. Quote Selected
SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #8 – November 21, 2016, 10:13:47 AM You can get SN95 brakes on Fox width axles but it requires a different axle bracket sold by North Racecars here:http://www.northracecars.com/Brakes.htmlI have these brackets on my Bird with the Cobra rear brakes and Fox length axles and they work great. When I did Cobra brakes on the rear I simply cut it off with a cut off wheel on my die grinder and called it a day. Never noticed any issues with "moaning" from the rear brakes as the Cobra backing plates are pretty stout (they bolt up no problem to the TC rear)And in case you're wondering the stock TC brake hoses and e-brake cables mount up no problem to the Cobra stuff. SN95 REAR Cobra brakes Reply #10 – November 23, 2016, 04:16:24 PM X2 on the TC e-brake lines. I swiped all the hangers off a wrecked TC and got new e-brake lines from the parts store. Quote Selected
