Window Tearing Away From Plastic Clips

Hey have any of you guys had the issue with your windows tearing away from the silicone in those beige plastic clips and then getting stuck sideways? At first I thought it was just old age on the part of the silicone and the clips so I removed the window, cleaned the glass and the clips, and finally reinstalled with new silicone. I waited 24 hours and all seemed well and good after I tested it. Then the weather got a bit colder and the same clip tore loose again. I'm just curious as to whether or not there is something I can do to lube the tracks or else figure out why my window keeps coming undone?

I'd like to put my door panel back on at some point.

I had the same problem. What I did was cleaned up the clips, sanded the window, drilled a couple of small holes in the clips, and j-b welded the clip to the window. Let it sit for 24 hrs and have had no problems since.

I like windsheild adhesive since its designed for metal, plastic, and glass. its also slightly.flexable and should remain that way so.a bit of binding doesn't just rip the window right off.
Mr. Tom Renzo has posted pictures where he uses some u-channel and makes a new bracket firor the window to glue in.

i like to use windsheild adhesive, must be above freezing and takes well over 24 hours to cure. lube tracks with white lithium grease, anything that moves. if your clips are damaged, the "help" section of dorman parts at your auto store sells replacement window clips which are much larger labeled as for ford/dodge.

good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

only thing that I could get to work, was automotive urethane seam sealer.... That stuff sticks to everything, and doesn't ever let go.. It's been 3 years, and still holding

they came out with a fix for that. it was replacement beige clips that had small bolts you could run in and snug up against the glass. (obviously not tight). but between the the bolt and adhesive it did the fix. i haven't seen any in years but you might be able to find some if you searched around.

Haha! The turbcoupe I'm currently stripping for parts has these! Which is good, because google failed to produce any real results.

That is exactly what I wound up doing, been fine since.  About 4 yrs ago.  I also cleaned and lubed the window tracks and made sure they didnt bind anywhere.

Thank You Stacks for the kind words and remembering my fix.

Ok once again what you have to do is make full length channels. I have posted them on here numerous times. It is the only permanent fix. I make these all the time for my customers. All the other fixes in my view do not work. And i have tried all of them many years ago in vain. Make 2 of these and call it a day. These full length channels i make have never broke loose from the glass. I use window weld to fill the channel and raise the window and let dry overnight. DONE FINISHED PROBLEM SOLVED!!  Many will claim the stock clips and sanding the glass works with good results. yes in warm climates they can for a while. But one cold morning after a light snow or rain and the window freezes to the channel and POOF they separate. Have a great evening guys

There's a saying among a group of racers I worked with, "It's not built until it's Team Mercury overbuilt." and it definitely applies to your window channels Tom. My question is whether or not you've ever had to remove a window placed within one of your tracks? I can just imagine needed to do some bodywork someday and cursing myself for so thoroughly installing my windows.

I guess you could just light the adhesive on fire, which I totally didn't do to remove those aluminum clips I mentioned earlier, to relax the adhesive along those tracks.

Take the bolt/nut off and it will come out just like a normal clip would.

I have had those windows out many times. just unbolt them from the window regulator. Why would you heat the glass to remove the window clips. The windows come with the clips from the factory when new. They bolt in. Have a great day guys!!
