87 Cougar LS For Sale

I've decided to sell my daily driver.  It's been a great reliable car for the last 14 years, but with our 9 month old adopted daughter a 4-door car is more "family friendly".  I'm seeing if there is any interest here before I consider donating it or whatever I can come up with.  We have 4 vehicles and only a 2 car garage/driveway and I need to free up space.

The particulars:

1987 Mercury Cougar LS
3.8L V-6
266,000 miles
PW / PL
6-way power driver's seat

The Good:

  • Daily driven and very reliable (last major trip was Lake Superior Circle tour from Kansas in 2011 (2500+ miles) flawless drive)
  • Interior in very good condition (rear seat like new)
  • Clear headlight / marker lenses (I bought them from Ford about 10 years ago when they were still available...they have held up well)
  • All electrical accessories work
  • Transmission strong...can accelerate in OD easily...doesn't slip...tranny just flushed last Spring (filter and pan gasket replaced also)
  • I have complete repair/oil change history from work I did or mechanics for the last 14 years
  • Pioneer head units (DEH-X9500BHS CD RDS Receiver with Sirius XM satellite antenna, DEQ-7600 15-band DSP Equalizer)
  • Newer battery, alternator, steering rack (fast ratio), p/s pump, starter

Known issues:

  • A/C no longer works (all components there, but compressor is shot)
  • Heater core has small leak (still heats fine, but you get antifreeze smell and defrost fogs up windshield on damp days)
  • Front and rear main engine seals weep some oil
  • Fuel gauge registers 1/3 after complete fill-up...after 50-75 miles, comes back to correct reading and is accurate for rest of tank of fuel
  • Seat latches started "catching" - when you sit in them, they "pop" back into place (only happens if you have folded the seat forward)
  • Font seat belt sleeves deteriorated & buckle receivers should be re-built (spring on driver side lets loose occasionally)
  • Wiper motor just started sticking once in a while (wipers stay in "down" but "on" position instead of fully down)
  • All body panels from the beltline down are starting to rust out...I last did body work 3 years ago and it would be more than I'm capable of doing now

Car is in Olathe, Kansas (suburb of Kansas City).

Asking $750 / best offer

I have a fair amount of parts that I may sell separately or to a potential buyer we can work something out.  (full set of near mint taillights, (4) blasted and polished snowflake rims, numerous excellent condition trim pieces, near mint turn signal lenses, odds/ends)

Thanks for looking!  I'd like to see her go to a fellow Fox lover, if possible :D

Wow, 266K and on a 3.8 no less!! I don't think I've ever seen a Fox T-Bird or Cat of any year with more that 170K.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Other than some personal items, I'm selling the car as-is.  So, yes, the stereo comes with it.  (Along with a 1 1/4" receiver hitch with 2 receivers, for example)

The stereo is not anything real extravagant, just something nice I put together that I liked.  As previously mentioned it has the Pioneer CD head unit (which is only a little over a year old) and includes a SiriusXM satellite tuner with antenna.  Mounted below that in the dash is the Pioneer 15-band digital EQ.  I have Cerwin-Vega 6.5" separates up front (with custom tweeter pods I made for the inside of the doors opposite the mirrors).  There are Optimus 6"x9"s in the rear deck (back when Radio Shack made some decent car audio components).  In the trunk is a Crunch Audio (not sure if they're even made anymore) 4-channel amplifier running both sets of speakers.  Basic specs on the amp are below:

Crunch Audio "Drive Series" V-3004 300W Bridgeable 4-channel Amplifier
75W x 4 @ 4 ohms 1kHz, 0.03% THD
125W x 4 @ 2 ohms 1kHz, 0.05% THD
250W x 2 @ 4 ohms (Bridged), 0.05% THD
S/N Ratio >90 dB
Channel Separation >98 dB
Frequency Response 10 Hz - 40 kHz

Not exceptional specs, but adequate for what I had in mind.

I'm pretty sure you can look up the Pioneer components on their website for complete information.

HU:  Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS
EQ:  Pioneer DEQ-7600
