Stock stereo interchange?

The radio in my '89 LSC is completely dead. I had a stock Ford CD player in my '88 LSC, but it was thrown in at a later date.. because the build date is Aug. 21, 1991.

(sorry for lack of clarity.. this camera does NOT like my overhead lights)

Both have identical plugs at the back of the units:

We figured we'd test that CD player in there, but it's dead too. (we're getting power on the plug, and we tested both units in another vehicle)

Anyway, I put "Ford CD player" in Ebay and I see that a lot of '94-up Fords have CD players with the identical plugs in the back.. but it has been speculated that maybe the pinouts might be different or something.

Does anyone know for sure what will and won't interchange with that style plug set, cassette or CD? (actually I could use a working cassette player more than a CD player, because I have a portable MP3 CD player I use with a tape adapter.. but either would be OK as long as it made a noise other than static or A/C blower whine) I really need to pick something up cheap to stick in here, and knowing what interchanges with what will help me look for it. If you know of a guide to this stuff somewhere, that would be even better. Every car I have has Premium Sound, so hopefully this info will be useful up to 4x over. (if the '88 and '86 T-birds have the same plugs, anyway.. I know my '88 could use a cheap radio if I did something with the car.. still haven't completely decided the fate of a couple of the cars)

Don't use a radio, get a blank plate instead. Radio is too much of a distraction.

Every time I go away for the weekend I come back and get to read a good argument :p I've swapped radios in these and other Fords when the original would go belly up on me and never really paid attention to the build dates, but the replacements always worked. Maybe I just got lucky.....

On a more important note, I have a stock radio out of my 87 that should work if you have the original premium sound amp in the trunk. Let me know if you want it.

The power plugs are the same on the '86-up Bird/Coug/LSC and every other Ford vehicle starting '87. Except for some of the premium sound systems(the ones with the EQ), all the speaker plugs are the same on the radio and radio/cassette combos(premium with EQ heads are unique, will not function in a non-premium system, but a std unit will work in a premium EQ system). The radio/CDs have a totally different speaker plug arrangement, that will require some rewiring.

Since I have 2 or 3 people in the hunt for replacing this stereo but no one has given a price, I figured I'd post this for reference:

That looks like the one in the wifes '93 Grand Marquis, used those up to approx '97 or so..

FYI if you don't already know, those have small clips on ether side that have to be relased to remove. They take a little work(remove clips, bolt on ears, may take a little drilling) to mount in the older models that have the ears to hold them in.

I see the release holes on the side of the faceplate, now that you mention it.. but at the time I didn't notice.

I've had several offers from the others around here to ship me a stock stereo. Sorry I haven't responded to any of the PMs yet.. been in and out of the house all afternoon messing around with the Mark when it's not pouring.

Well .. the stereo in my '86 has plugs similar to my old '94 Escort's stereo.. the two lines of blade-type connections. Looks like I'll be sing up $25 for one of the offers I got yesterday.

Needed decent gauges.. my temp. gauge went out on the Mark. (and all it has other than that and idiot lights is speedo/tach/fuel) Hopefully next week I'll buy a stock stereo from someone here who offered one awhile back.. but knowing how the car is behaving is more important than listening to music, so this came first.
