Doomsday prepping for our fox bodies

Ever catch yourself buying parts for your car in multiples of twos?

Today I bought two tail shaft bushing kits consisting of the tail shaft bushing and the tail shaft seal

I'm starting to think that the box store parts stores will stop arrying a lot of things we have been taking for granted over the past few years

Anyone else doing this

Not yet for most things.  I probably should, though, especially for consumables like belts, gaskets and hoses.  Even if they are still available, the local parts shop may not have them in stock when needed.

yeah, I don't think they made too many 5.0's or aod's or anything like that ;).

I find that it is very, very easy to find compatable parts from newer cars. other then car specific parts like body/interior, I don't think we have much to worry about for quite some time. just my personal opinion.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Any thought of stocking spare tail lights, front lamps, etc?  My concern is these plastic components are decomposing a little every day and they will be the parts not possible to replace.

Exterior lights, and any other parts that are specific to only our cars are the parts that are getting harder to find. Drivetrain parts will remain easy with as many 5.0 engines that were produced, and as popular as Fox body Stangs still are....although I wouldn't want one myself. Tail lights for my Bird are getting super hard to find without some kind of break or crack in them. Head lights are getting wicked hard to find as new.

Don't take for granted a car being in a yard indefinitely either. At a local yard, there was an 83 cougar that I was getting parts whenever I needed them. I stopped the other day and it was gone. I asked them what happened to it, and they said they sped it. I was the only person who ever bought anything off of it. I should have got more stuff, now it's gone. My d it pretty big already though...

It's good to know that the "original" 5.0 was made up until 13 years ago.
1987 20th Anniversary Cougar, 302 "5.0" GT-40 heads (F3ZE '93 Cobra) and TMoss Ported H.O. intake, H.O. camshaft
2.5" Duals, no cats, Flowmaster 40s, Richmond 3.73s w/ Trac-Lok, maxed out Baumann shift kit, 3000 RPM Dirty Dog non-lock TC
Aside from the Mustang crinkle headers, still looks like it's only 150 HP...

1988 Black XR7 Procharger P600B intercooled, Edelbrock Performer non-RPM heads, GT40 intake AOD, 13 PSI @5000 RPM. 93 octane

They still make new blocks. Hell you can build a brand new 302/5.0 out of non factory parts.

Well yes, hot-rodding will make sure it really never ends, but my comment was more directed toward the previous comment re: the parts stores. Of course, it's not like you can't get bearings for a '65 350 4-bolt from Advance! Depends on what it is you need lol

Yeah parts stores will have the mechanical bits for a long time as they are shared with many other cars. I would be more worried about finding trim bits, body parts, and soft interior parts. That stuff isn't getting reproduced. By the time any of these cars make it to the junk yard now they are beat bad. I can't remember the last time I was able to salvage anything from the interior of one of these cars at a self service junk yard. It's the same way with my Mark VII. I would never buy one if these cars with a trashed interior. That's the hardest stuff to find in excellent shape.
