Another era appropriate upgrade would be a set of the 8 hole 14" wheels that came on 83-84 Turbo Coupes and later Sport/LX cars.

I went with 87-88 TC Snowflake wheels on mine as they are era appropriate and a unique Thunderbird wheel option. My Thunderbird originally had the 14" wire wheels your car has now. Two months after I bought it I swapped on a set of 14" 8 hole wheels. I just couldn't stand the wire hubcaps ;). I had to swap out the 14" wheels with the engine upgrade as the tires were a bit too small for the power output of the engine.
88 Thunderbird LX: 306, Edelbrock Performer heads, Comp 266HR cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, bunch of other stuff.

Yea, lots of options but since it's been this way since the day I bought it, why change now?

Not to say at some point I won't consider it but right now it's a low priority.  Besides I want to be the one person on here who likes the look of whitewalls and hubcaps!  :giggle:

Congrats! 30 years is a long time to have a car. I've had my 88 Base for 23 years now. And still love it. Of course mine has had quite a few changes done.

Thanks...

23 years is a long time to have a car too!  Time flies huh?

I guess I like to hang on to cars, I still have my first car, a 1967 Fairlane. :hick:

I guess owning mine for 11 years isn't that long. It was the first car I ever bought. I was 17 at the time.

I can't believe I've owned my red cougar for 9 years, and known it for 15 (dad bought it in 1998). So many good times, and many more to come...
1987 20th Anniversary Cougar, 302 "5.0" GT-40 heads (F3ZE '93 Cobra) and TMoss Ported H.O. intake, H.O. camshaft
2.5" Duals, no cats, Flowmaster 40s, Richmond 3.73s w/ Trac-Lok, maxed out Baumann shift kit, 3000 RPM Dirty Dog non-lock TC
Aside from the Mustang crinkle headers, still looks like it's only 150 HP...
1988 Black XR7 Trick Flow top end, Tremec 3550
1988 Black XR7 Procharger P600B intercooled, Edelbrock Performer non-RPM heads, GT40 intake AOD, 13 PSI @5000 RPM. 93 octane

If you still have the first car you ever bought after 11 years, I'd say that's something special and already long term ownership! :burnout:

I detect a trend in hanging on to and enjoying the cars we love. :hick:

It's a great car in and of itself, but just as influential are all of the stories from people at car shows, or people in general who miss their old vehicle. The regret you see and hear is just poignant. The message is clear: As soon as you even think about selling it, slap yourself in the face about 50 times. And then be sure not to forget to not sell it. I also want to be able to stand there and say I've owned it for 30+ years just like you are, proud that I kept it clean and dry all those years and preserved it from the perils every other car out there has to deal with.

I'm surprised how many people seem to have forgot about these cars until they see one.  Then they follow up with an interesting story and usually a positive experience.  Just had it to a car show a few weekends ago and a guy came up to me and said he owned a 84 Cougar and it was a great car and rode so well.  Lots of people can't believe it's old enough to have antique plates on it either!  ;)

I've gotten a bunch of "WTF?" looks since I've been driving the Thunderbird around this year with antique plates. I think people don't realize how old it is. I get many more looks and thumbs up than I used to as well, thanks to the antique plates. These cars are old but they don't look old like a GM G-body coupe does.
