Cooling fan switch

Hi guys.
I have a problem with cooling fan switch. How the hell it works? It's screwed in the intake manifold, not in the cylinder head or engine block as shown in EVTM. I think my switch is dead, because it works intermitently.
Is there any better option to locate this switch? I don't like its location at all. I guess it should be in contact with coolant.


I think they made a mistake, because TFI distributor is in the left, not in the centre.

i would think on the TC, there is also coolant passages within the upper intake,, thats true it should be in contact with coolant.

80's Chevys made the fan come on and go off the same way

apparently,, If the 87evtm is similar,
pin 55 & 52 of your eec will add a ground to your individual primary and secondary fan relays respectively within the IVR module when the EEC gets the data to supply the ground.

the ivr has a built in volage inverter to trigger the relay coil on the primary relay as well.

The relays get thier input power directly from fuse links,,,
again, this is from the 87evtm



i assume the coolant temp switch on the engine is reporting back to the eec and not direclty linked to the fans themselves.. yes if defective it would show this symtom i would think.,, either that or a sticky relay / contact.

I looked to the engine bay yesterday again and you were right. There is a water passage in the lower intake manifold going to water - oil heat exchanger.
It means, that I have to drain the cooling system.  it :mad:.

I will have to find some temporary solution, because, I can't buy this switch here, and even if I order one from eBay now, the shipping will take almost a month.
EDIT: I've bought it from RockAuto and sent it to my buddy in US, she will go here in two weeks :).

No, it isn't connected to EEC, 83-86 TC has separate cooling fan relay somewhere behind the glovebox. It has only one cooling fan without speed regulator.

are you talking about the radiator fan or the in cabin blower motor?

The ECT is located between cyl 2&3 in the lower intake'

The Fan control sensor is just above the oil filter

And the AC/fan control module is  behind the dash by the glove compartment

The sensor puts the fan on at 222* way to hot for me so i swap them out for a cooler running engine. Switches of all different temps are available from JEGS

The cooling fan controller is up under the dash on the driver side of the car. Kind of a flaky piece, IMO. 

Sometimes, that coolant passage in the intake gets clogged up with crud from the cooling system and doesn't really allow coolant to flow over the switch.

Also, the turn on temp of the stock switches is too high, IMO.  They come on at over 230*F (When they decide to come on). If your stock controller is still working, you should look into a universal temp switch that comes on at a lower temp and replace the stock one.

I got out bid on a 1947 Cadillac by a guy who lived in Switzerland. The shipping alone was probably a lot more than what I bid on the car. They buy them for parts.

Sorry the module in fact is on the left hand side. I was thinking MUSTANG!!!

By the way there is a TSB ON IT. But i redesigned a new setup with a 75 AMP relay. Ford posted 222 On temp. If the lower is clogged the ECT will also be effected and set a code!!! MAYBE!!!
