5 lug swap

Ok here goes. I have a friend that has a 96 mustang. The rear is Built up with 35 spline axels and a locker (I'm going to need this for my setup). He got this car on a trade and is just planning on selling it as is. What we would like to do is swap my TC rear end for his. I know that the rear would be simple enough but I am 4 lug he is 5 lug can we swap the 4 and 5 lug stuff over from the front as well? He really doesn't care if he ends up with a 4 lug setup on his 96 as long as it doesn't end up costing anything to do it.

You'll need to put the Fox balljoints on the control arms to mount the Tbird spindles....otherwise, its just swapping parts back and forth. There will be a few mods to get the brakes working on both cars..I'd probably swap boosters and master cylinders between the two, as well.

So both cars will require fix ball joints?

If you use the SN95 spindle, you'll need sn95 ball joints..OR you can use some washers to make up the difference. The ball joint mount on the Fox Spindle is thicker than the same place on the SN95 spindle...that's why SN95 ball joints aren't as long.
I used SN95 b/j on mine...

Just something to think about when it comes time to re-assemble the Stang, you'll need the Fox ones as the SN95 won't protrude through enough to be able to work.

If the 96 Mustang is a V8 car then the brakes on it will the be hydroboost so the MC and "booster" will not work.  You need them from a 94-95 Cobra or GT car or 94-98 V6 car if your are going to use the SN95 Mustang gear as they all have vacuum boosted brakes.  If it were me I would order a booster for a 93 Cobra as it will just about bolt right up to the fire wall where the SN95 boosters require you to slot the holes on the firewall pretty dramatically.  Another thing to consider is if your car has SAE or Metric threads on the brake lines.  If they are SAE then use an 85 Lincoln Town car MC as it has SAE threads and a 1" bore which works really well with the SN95 brakes as well as the Cobra setup.  Some people balk at the Lincoln MC because it does not look new like the plastic units on the SN95 cars but cast iron like the older units.  However if you want the newer MC look there are metric to SAE adapters and I think most parts stores have them so you would need to know the SAE thread on your brake lines that attach to the MC and then take the MC up to a parts store to get the correct adapters.

I've read the quad shock mounts are in different spots on the axles.
Both cars will not be using the quads if that is true.
I've also read the emergency brake connections are different.
If that is true, both cars will not have E-brakes.

I have already converted the car over to vacuum using the svo master and I have ditched the quad shocks long ago. Actually what we ended up doing was we have found a stock 96 rear for 200 that we are going to swap into his car so I can get the build rear out of his. So at some point down the road I will have my stock 88 tc 373 rearend up for sale.

Is all of your stuff four lug?  I had the SVO master with the stock vacuum booster, the stock front brakes, and the TC brakes on the rear in my 83 looong ago and it was the worst braking system I ever put on that car.  The MC was completely wrong for that setup.  I'd be curious as to what your combo currently is and what calipers are on the built rear end you are getting.

Yes the svo master sucks with the stock brake set up. You have to press the brake so hard to get the car to stop. I was going to change the mc or go with b much larger brake setup.

Go here and read up so you can make a more informed decision as to what MC will be the best fit for the brakes you are running.  If you have not seen this site before is it considered one of the best tech write ups on most of the Mustang boards.
