aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! June 14, 2005, 07:52:15 PM i have a 1600W amp hooked up to 2 12" subs. now the problem is i went to put a 1 farad cap on it and when i disconected the fuse it made a pop and my amp started to smoke. after finding the burnt out part on the amp and changing it and all it whants to do is pop the fuse that goes into the amp to protect it from overloading. so what could cause this problem? and i tryed a 30 amp fuse in the amp and it fryed tha really easily. so what is the issue? Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #1 – June 14, 2005, 11:44:04 PM your fuse rating is probabbly too low you need at least a 60 amp fuse if not an 80 amp fuse close to your battery. The fuse on your amp should match the fuse in your power wire. also with a cap, you are supposed to charge that thing before you ever hook it up to your amp. Make sure you are using 4ga wire or 2ga also Quote Selected
Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #2 – June 15, 2005, 12:06:12 PM well the cap isn't hooked up anymore. and my amp came with a 15 amp fuse. and before i hooked up the cap it was working beautifuly. no issues at all. now it blows fuses. even after reparing the burnt out part. so what could be causing the problem? something shorting on the board? or something burnt open? Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #3 – June 15, 2005, 01:35:58 PM sounds like the amp is taking in way to much power. It would imply that there are parts that are damaged to the amp. Specially with the smokeing stuff. The capacitar would have made extra power when it was avaliable. It could be to small of a gauge of wire. It could also be that there is to much power drain and the alt isnt getting enough power to the amp. Just my 2 cents. Quote Selected
Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #4 – June 15, 2005, 03:38:01 PM what brand amp? if it truly does 1600 continuous rms 30 is nothing, i think my 600 watt amp came with 60amp fuse or so. Quote Selected

Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #7 – July 13, 2005, 02:38:20 AM yea a 30 amp fuse in that amp is way to small you gotta be kidding to think that would work my 800 2ch amp runs 2 40s lol n with caps u do need to charge b4 you go in but i never used a cap in my car and ive never had a problem, ur amp may say 1600 w but the likley hood of it putting out 1600w is minimal it prob only puts out about 1000w rms max most amps drain more than they put out Quote Selected
Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #8 – July 13, 2005, 01:59:19 PM Did you buy it new or did somebody tell you it was a 1600w amp because if it only has one fuse in it especially if the fuse in it was a 15amp theres no way in hell its rated that high. a 1600w amps gonna have a minimum of 2 fuses at 30amps each but MOST likely 3 30amp(or higher) fuses.Anyways, sounds like you might have reversed the polarity when hooking up the farad cap. How were you wiring it up?Either way, I agree with shame, sounds like its screwed...What kind was it? Quote Selected
Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #9 – July 13, 2005, 11:10:32 PM Lost brew sounds like you got scammed buy that big sticker that tells you max power not the real continuious power output. Next time take a calculator to the place with you and do this. 14volts X 15amps = 216watts real true power most of the time. So make sure that you really look to see what the RMS power output is that is what you need. Also just think of your current amp as a motor. if it was making noise and you tore the motor down and found that the one little rod bearing was makeing the noise that it is ok to just replace that and expect everything to be all right with the rest of the stuff. You need to find out why that part fried in the amp and then out might be able to fix the amp. But in all cases it is just cheaper to but a new REAL AMP and be done with it. The amp I have now is a Soundstream Reference 705s. I paid damm near a grand for it about ten years ago. It has been in 9 cars/trucks. And until 6months ago it has the best dam amp ever. So save up and buy another amp but buy a good one. Oh buy the way my amp has a liftime garantee that if it needs service it cost $150 no matter what is wrong. SO that also pays off. To buy my amp on ebay I've found then as cheap as $400. Quote Selected

No offense man but is there anyone else out there that can confirm this? Sorry but its just that as many people that are out there with car audio and have done all the installation themselves. I have never heard of one person ever crossing the cap charge on a farad cap and blowing it up. Im sure it has happened before and maybe your right, they just dont live to tell about it because if one { } that big can throw you acrossed a room a 1 or 2 farad cap would be like a lil block of C4 going off in your trunk... Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #12 – July 17, 2005, 01:21:29 PM I bet that could happen but i would take lots of juice and I wouldn't want to be there. But no I haven;t heard of anyone blowing up a fard cap. But it would hurt probbly kill Quote Selected
Re: aftermarket amp problems..... ANYBODY HELP!!! Reply #13 – July 18, 2005, 09:02:10 AM Connected backwards caps will blow up... While I've never blown up a large cap such as used in car audio, I've popped a few small ones over the years inside TVs. Launched a small one(about the size of a thimble) a few years ago that went over into the customer waiting area, had a bunch of people ducking and running for cover... :DAlso IF a CHARGED cap is connected backwards to a amp, its likely gonna short the output ICs/transistors.
